My old monitor is slowly dying on me. It is a 19" 4/3 The new one is a 1080 23". I actually like the size of the 19" more. Web pages are so spread out it makes it a pain to read. The reason I went with a 23 wide-screen is that I use it for a TV and also movies in my room. I also thought that games would play wide screen too, but FEAR doesn't. I don't know about others. Well the price was right ($150 shipped) and I hope to get used to it. Here is the link to where I bought it.

Very nice Ben. I have 2 of these Samsung 23s:

They actually have a 2048 x 1152 resolution, which is still 16:9. Prompted my purchase of a GTX 295 when it was still king :). And I think they were only like $170 when I got 'em.

I keep one at work - definitely helps with all the spreadsheets I work with. Still think 16:10 is better for computer stuff tho.

    Fear widescreen:
    Widescreen Support

F.E.A.R. version 1.08 has full widescreen support for resolutions up to 1920x1080.

Older versions of F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon) do not have native widescreen support. To force a custom resolution go to the following directory 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Monolith Productions\FEAR' and open the file 'settings.cfg' with a text editor (such as Notepad).

The two lines we are interested in are "ScreenWidth" and "ScreenHeight".

Change these to your desired resolution. For example, if you want a resolution of 1440x900, it should look like this:

    "ScreenWidth" "1440"
    "ScreenHeight" "900"

Changing the resolution also changes the FOV so there is no need to do anything else.

Please note, going into the 'Options > Display' menu will reset the resolution to 640x480.

    Try C:\[your user]\My Documents\Monolith Productions\FEAR

    Alternately search C:\users for settings.cfg

    I don't have fear :/

Found it. Much better than before. I have slight jitter with the candy turned up, but this is an older card. GeForce8800GTX 756meg.
    Many thanks

Spend the extra money and get the ASUS. The colors on this one just aren't that vivid. It gets great reviews, but I just don't see it.

Hmmm.have you played around with the hard to navigate (at first)on screen adjustments. It took me a couple days to get mine the way I liked it.I have the G24Hbmid olympic model and love it.I did set mine to cold instead of warm too. I also had a 19" sony that started to die after 10 years.

For all around use where you don't need 2560x1600+ resolution (like photo processing, etc.), here's a pretty nice monitor I've had great success with: Samsung XL2370. It's LED backlit so it's contrast is great. I ended up buying 3 for home. I'm with you, Ben, on the 4:3 ratio and have that on my Dell S-IPS panels in my studio. The real estate is so much more useful for getting things done.

Does your monitor have a matte screen? Many of the monitors with glossy screens are more 'vivid', but less color accurate.

    have you calibrated the monitor?

As far as aspect ratios, my favorite is 16:10... I think 4:3 or 5:4 monitors are fine for spreadsheets and such, but if you're doing video/photo editing or playing games I think the wider screens help... not 16:9 wide though.

Another to look at is this:
    http://www.amazon.com/HP-2509m-25-Inch-Diagonal-Monitor/dp/B002MT6SDU/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1299619107&sr=1-1

I have had mine for about 9 months and its quite good. Its not LED backlit though, but its good enough for me.

Wish I had the cash for a Dell U2711 or some of the higher end NEC monitors

I just adjusted it for "graphics" in the menu. It is better now, but the brightness needed is almost full up. I just don't see getting many years out of this. I'll mess with it some more, but I still recommend the ASUS for a few $ more.
