The Stones are releasing High-Def downloads of their albums. Time to break down and buy the Olive music server. This is great timing as I have been debating what to buy next.

"The Rolling Stones plan to sell high-quality downloads of their first 27 records for the first time online."

"Professional music producers generally capture studio recordings in a 24-bit, high-fidelity audio format. But before the originals are pressed onto CDs or distributed to digital sellers like Apple's iTunes, they're downgraded to 16-bit files, which audiophiles say don't sound as good."

"The HDtracks releases are based on remasters that were pressed on Super Audio CDs between 2002 and 2004."

The flac's should be just as good as the SACD's, they used the masters for the SACD's. Abkco is doing this release. This is very cool, albeit a bit expensive imo.
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

    I agree...SACD is the best..

Why don't they do both? You can't CF sacd anyway.

I want the music before it gets futzed with and converted.

???? The only futzing is turning the high-res files into DSD. It isn't as if they were recorded in DSD.

What would be nice for those who want hard copies is to also release them on BlueRay music disks. Like what Neil Young is doing with his archive remastering. I plan on buying the Oppo BD93 Bluray player since it is designed for better audio and offers balanced stereo outputs. That is perfect for BR music.

But, the high-res files on a music server is the best way to go in terms of ease of use, etc. Plus, you can always upgrade your DAC as better DACs become available at lower prices

Anyway, it appears the dam is about to break, and a flood of high-res files will be available for purchase.

I think you mean the Oppo BD 95.

And I guess if one had to choose on a digital download then this method is superior.

I purchased the download of Through The Past Darkly last night and gave it a listen, since it's got some great hits on it, and I have the original cd for comparison. It sounds a lot better. I'm just not convinced that it's sounding better because it's in 24-bit, or if it's sounding better because it's a quality re-mastering. I think this music would sound just as good if the same master were released on redbook cd. But no doubt it's better than the original.
