using avr for pre-amp

Hi guys,
I have been through this thread a few times and now I'm having trouble setting it up. Let me set the scene I originally have a Yamaha rx-v665-a set of Kilpsch speakers a Klipsch 8in pwrd sub w/ a cd player.Everything works fine except I'm not into movies that much so I went to 2-channel.Now I have an Adcom gfa555 200wpc power amp and was told I could use the Yamaha
as a pre-amp buy putting the ICs into front pre-outs.At first I must have used the wrong ports and almost blew the Infinity SM112s I'm using for the 2ch rig.
After that I said f this and got an independent pre an Onkyo P 301 and all is ok and I have my 2 seperate systems. Well I'm home alot and tried a little experiment w/ the Yamaha again. This time it is hooked up to front pre-outs and I get music but I get both systems still playing. I've tried muteing but that shuts it all down I also tried settings in 2 ch 7-ch and still both systems are playing. I know there is something so simple I'm missing but I can't find it
Either way I have 2 systems but I would on occassion like to try the Yamaha.

Not sure what your question is here. What are you trying to accomplish?
Also, please try using some punctuation, your message is difficult to read when it all runs together.

Your post is incredibly hard to understand. Use the Yamaha for HT. The Onkyo pre and Adcom power amp for 2 channel. Using the Yamaha as a pre with that power amp is not going to sound as nice as using the 301. And why would you want to do that if you have a dedicated preamp already?

Sorry for the run on sentences.Yes ,I do have a seperate pre now. When I got the Adcom I
was told you can use the Yamaha as a pre-amp. I wanted to see and hear what it sounds like.My mistake in the h/u of the Adcom w/ the Yamaha lead me to the Onkyo.Yes the Onkyo sounds fine and to be quite honest it's silent.I just wanted to use a feature on the avr that I already had. Now, can anyone tell me where I messed up by putting the ICs in the front pre-outs.Both systems worked together and that's not what I was going for.
Again I apoligise for the sloppy english.

After thought, they do share a cdp one on HDMI to the Yamaha and analog to the Onkyo.

    Hey leftwinger,

Did you ever get this figured out? For clarification purposes, you have the following components:

    Yamaha RX-V655 (Receiver)
    Onkyo P301 (Preamp)
    Adcom GFA (Amp)
    Denon CD Player

What does each "system" consist of?

    How are both systems connected?

Are they somehow connected to each other?

Do you use the same 2 channels (speakers) for stereo playback as you do within your 7-channel system?

Is your source connected to both the Onkyo and the Yamaha?

When you say, "I also tried settings in 2 ch 7-ch and still both systems are playing," it would appear that you have your dedicated 2-channel speakers (via preouts) connected to your Adcom amp. This would mean that you use the same 2 speakers for stereo playback, as you do within your 7-channel setup.

This is just a shot in the dark, but maybe you need either an input selector or speaker selector.

TORI 3, For H/T >Tosiba au37> Yamaha RX-V665 AVR>Yamaha YSD-11DOCK> Klipsch set500 w/ 8inpwrd sub> Denon1940ci--cdp. Then Denon goes Hdmi all others are direct and the dock has dedicated port.
2-CHANNEL> Adcom gfa-555 200wpc>Onkyo P-301 pre >InfinitySM112S>Denon1940ci--cdp>SHURE PRO 240 headphones. The shared Denon is h/u by analog RCAs and works perfectly
So yes 2 indepentent speaker set-ups w/ the only 2 devices shared are the I-pod and the Denon. The seperation w/ using the pre-outs was a diappointment and maybe I did it wrong, hearing from other forumites it should work.....lw

So when you're using the Denon sound is coming from all 7 speakers, instead of only two, right?

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but the reason why you're getting sound from all seven speakers is because you have five speakers hooked up through your receiver and two speakers connected to your amp. When they're running, juice is going to all seven speakers.

Does this occur even if you put your receiver in "Direct" mode? It shouldn't because your L and R preouts from your receiver should be going directly to your amp, which would in turn power your L and R speakers.

Direct mode is usually just for 2-channel listening...not seven channel listening...there are other modes on your receiver for that.

Not trying to be too basic, just trying to stick to simple principles that are often overlooked with a lot of wiring. I screw things up all the time.

Tori 3 I do have that direct mode w/the blue light that comes on. Supposedly it is used to filter out any unwanted frequencys and or stray voltage . truth be told I have not tried this setting.Maybe this would do it ,but your the first to bring this up and after so many forumites say they have the same amp NEVER mentioned this. Thanks ,and I'll try it .....LW
