Two questions on RTA 12 caps. What is the difference between the blue cap in one picture of the top X over (I asume it is an electrolytic) and black one in the other picture of the other x over THE VALUES ARE EXACTLY THE SAME
In the third picture Polk used the black ones on the low side on the top X over and on the X over inside from around 1981 to early 84 During early 84 I have seen several speakers with the black ones still on top but the little blue ones inside THE DRIVER WERE THE SAME and THE VALUES ARE EXACTLY THE SAME between the blue and the black. One would think you would want the same type in and out. The black one is much heavier and larger (same values) Are the black ones Silver mica or Mylar?? as describbed in the 1982 lit? Then they started using electros?? Maybe cheaper??

The blue one is an electrolytic. Both are inferior products. If you are upgrading remove the C5 mica cap.Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
Thanks

No money to upgrade but I do have extras of the black caps that are the same values as the blue ones that are on the crossover in the cabinet and thought at least i could replace the blue ones inside with the black ones so they would match the low side ones on top. The way they used to prior to around 24 or so.

If you can solder using caps like the Dayton's will yield significant gains.Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. I would not switch out old caps (Blue) for old caps (Black) myself. Even if they are the same value, they have probably both deteriorated just as much as well.
I can understand wanting to match them sonically but like Ben said and I agree you would be better off with Dayton's at the least. It will be a significant gain for a much smaller outlay of $$.
I did Dayton's for my first Crossover just to see if I was up to it and honestly I only saw a minimal improvement from the Dayton's with both Solen's or Sonicaps.
