It even took me by surprise and I'm a big Trent Reznor fan.

I thought the best part of that movie was the score. I recognized a few pieces of music from the Ghosts album while watching the movie. But it was awesome to see Reznor and Ross win that. Reznor is just a fantasic composer and it's refreshing to hear complex and interesting music that isn't just your average orchestra stuff in a movie score.

I think it's cool but why do you think it would kill the academy (so to speak)? The awards are voted on by the academy, so it's many of the people in the audience who voted for him.

I wasn't even surprised. I didn't see much competition frankly. Trent is a true artist and it's really nice to see him getting a nod from the academy.

When i first saw nin videos, heard how trent self mutilated, obliquely referring to childhood trauma, i really didnt think he would still be alive right now.

    So many have imploded.

Not my favorite band or type of music, except for ministry, but admire how he has overcome instead of succumbing.

Anybody know what the problems were in his youth?

I know that he was raised by his grandparents for the most part. Probably an abusive situation with his birth parent/s. I also know he has struggled with what appear to be BPD type traits. Of course, this all pure speculation. I have no direct personal knowledge.
