Hi All , Im new to the site . I have a Denon AVR -391 receiver with a pair of Polk TSI300s for the fronts , I just purchased a PSW110 subwoofer that should be here in a week . My question is ..do i have to worry about the subwoofer settings or does the LFE connection take care of all that . Im a bit overwhelmed when I read about all the settings involved .

Use the LFE connection and set the crossover point in the Denon to 80 Hz. Run a calibration and you're done.

    Thanks Again !

This is a very basic receiver without auto-calibration. All you can do is make manual adjustments as described in pages 7-9 here: http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutchfield.com/Manuals/033/033AVR391.PDF

Did your Denon come with a setup mic? I am not too familiar with Denon's, but if it has an auto calibration program (like Audessy for Onkyo) then you should be in business. If not, like quad said, use the LFE hookup and set your crossover at 80hz, that's pretty much all the auto calibration program would do anyway.

Worth a try and might sound better for you if you like a little more bass:

    X-Over: 80Hz
    LFE X-Over: 120Hz
    LFE+Main

    Give these settings a try.

The default setting has the speakers and sub overlap between the range of frequencies of 80-120Hz. Depending on the speakers, your room and what sounds best to you, this could be good or bad. My guess, it will give you a fuller sound but this is up to your ears to decide.

A crossover (x.over) will split the frequencies at the set point. Above the set point will be sent to the TSI speakers (small). Below the set point will go to the sub. By default, your Denon has the crossover set to 80Hz for speakers when you install a sub (on). So, anything above 80Hz will go to the TSI speakers while below will go to the sub as the sub is more suited and capable of playing the low frequencies. The default setting on the Sub x-over on your Denon is 120Hz which acts more like a higher frequencies filter since everything above 120Hz will not be played by the sub (but will still be played by the speakers since the speakers crossover of 80Hz tells them to play above that).

By selecting LFE+Main mode will insure that your sub will get the low frequencies regardless if you have the speakers set to small or large but set the speakers to small anyway. Page 7-9 explains this

    Speakers: Small
    X-Over: 80Hz

    LFE X-Over: 120Hz
    Mode: LFE+Main (or LFE)

In short, the Sub will play all freq. below 120Hz and the TSi speakers will play everything above 80Hz. 80-120Hz will be played by both.

Also, find a good location for the sub preferably up front.

Your TSi speakers are capable of playing below 80Hz so it's worth a try to set their crossover below 80Hz too like 60Hz.

Another setting I'd try is this:
    Speakers: Large
    X-Over: 60Hz

    LFE X-Over: 120Hz
    Mode: LFE+Main

    Good luck and have fun.

The LFE+Main has effect only if any of the regular speakers is set to Large. If all the speakers are set to small, LFE+Main functions same as LFE so might as well use LFE mode.

If any of the speakers is set to Large, the low frequencies will also be duplicated and routed to the sub so there would be a redundancy in these freq. This could cause a boomy sound or low frequencies cancelation which might be possible to tune by adjusting the location or direction of the sub. Crossover on the speakers will not matter if speakers are large so both large and sub will play low freq. below the x.over for the sub and not only 80-120Hz.

The CS20 center will most likely be set to small.

The thing here is that the TSi's and CS20 are capable of reproducing mid-bass better than the PSW110 and I'm over thinking of getting the best sound overall.

If the fronts are set to Large then the LFE+Main can come into play depending on how loud and clean the cass can be.

I know I phrased few things incorrectly before (late night) and wanted to clarify but best is to try the different settings and decide what sounds best.
