smoke coming from subs

I have a MTX audio 1000XD 2000W max, X Thunder series 1-channel class D mono car amp. It can produce 4 ohms: 500w RMS x 1 chan or 2 ohms: 1000w RMS x 1 chan. I have it hooked up to 2 polk audio mm1240 12" svc 4 ohm subs 800 watts max each and 425 watts RMS each. I have speaker wire running from the + and - of the amp going to the + and - of one sub and speaker wire going from the + and - of that sub going to the + and - of the second sub. I think i have it hooked up so that the amp produce 4 ohm: 500 watts RMS to each sub. When i turn them up loud smoke come out the two port holes of my sub box and the smoke has a burnt wire smell. Iv'e had my subs about a month and they still sound good. Do anyone know why they smoke when i turn them up loud?

Maybe they need an air-hole. Or maybe not.

That's 2ohms and 1000watts. You most likely over powered them. I have heated voice coils before and almost smoked them, but I caught it on time to prevent failure. Sounds like you need to adjust the levels of your amp.

You can't hook 2 4 Ohm subs up in any configuration that will result in 4 Ohms. You can have 2 Ohms or 8 Ohms. From what you describe, you're most likely running a 2 Ohm configuration. Still, since each speaker is rated 800 watts, that 1000 watt amp shouldn't be too much power. Since the smoke is coming out of the port holes, I'm going to go with that box has cheap small gauge wire you're burning the insulation off.

But really, the best best is to pull the drivers out of the box and take a look and see what's going on. Or we can sit and guess.

Thanks, that sounds like what i need to do, then later i'll get 2 more subs just like the ones i have and have the amp push all 4 of them. ? would that mean that each sub would be getting 500 watts RMS since the amp would be sending 4 ohms to each sub. Thanks for your help Ben.

Thanks for your answer, how can i hook the subs up to run 8 ohms, and would they still sound good, thanks once again.

Run the + from the amp to + on one sub, then run - to the + on the other sub, then run the - from the second sub to the - on the amp. That's 8 ohms, since the subs are in series.

They shouldn't sound any different. But I'd really seriously advise you to pull the subs and look at the wiring in the box and see if it look melted and/or burnt.

OK friend just checked the speaker wire inside the sub box and it still looks brand new, the speaker wire is thick it's not that cheap thin wire. smelled the sub itself and smelled a fant burnt wire smell from them. maybe the voice coil wire start to burn some that day i had them up real loud. Anyway just turned the gain on my amp down from half way up to just a quarter of the way up now but i turned my bass boost, sub filter and frequency response to 3/4 of the way up. Do you think this will be ok?

Why are you turning the subs down but turning bass boost up? That seems to defeat the point. So, probably going back to what someone else said: you're probably overdriving the subs.
