I have a new toy coming this week, i bought myself an Emotiva XPA-5. Thing is with all of the research I did to get to where im at, I over looked something (at least as far as i know to this point). My avr looks to only have a zone 12v trigger so how am I to hook up my new amp to my Onkyo 808 avr. Does anyone have experience with this situation? Any help is appreciated.

As much as i would like to use this problem as an excuse to update my new 808 I have to make it work for a while so my BA can recover

I think I understand your situation. I have the 708. Run the 12 volt cable from the zone two on the onkyo to the Emo. To turn on/off the Emo, first push the zone2 button at the top of the remote.

Not as good as a one button on/off solution with fully compatible equipment, but still better than (gasp) having to get off of the couch and walking all the way over to the gear itself.

    Two Channel Setup:

    Speakers: Wharfedale Opus 2-3
    Integrated Amp: Krell S-300i
    DAC: Arcam irDac

    Remote Control: iPad Mini

    3.2 Home Theater Setup:

    Subwoofer: SVS PB12NSD (X 2)
    AVR: Yamaha Aventage RX-A2030

Excuse the newbieness in me but getting off the couch like that just wont work out. So basically the 12v trigger is just for powering up and powering down the amp along side the powering up and down of the avr then?
    Alright thanks for your reply.

Yeah, you turn on the avr,and the amp turns on with it. If your asking how to hook it up, you need 5 rca analog cables, one for each channel, from the receivers preouts to the amp.

I have the same onkyo and emo, I bought a trigger cable and did not like the fact that I had to change the ave to zone 2 to make it shutoff the emo. I did without

Damn why didn't I think of that!! My Dad's been having to turn on his amp separately everytime he powers on his 707 b/c I couldn't understand how to get around the "Zone 2 12v trigger" issue. Good call :)

Yes thank you i understand that connection, but the Onkyo 808 doesnt have a 12v trigger connection for the main pre-outs, just for the zone 2 pre-outs. It doesnt make sense to me why it wouldnt, im thinking Onkyo feels like this avr has enough power or that the owners of it should take a break from the couch before and after each audio listening session.

    But thanks for the responses.

Is there a switched outlet on the back of the AVR that you can use to power something that puts out 12v?

My 808 has an outlet on the back. I don't know if it is switched or not. Do you think it would be rated high enough to power an amp?

I think your avr has a switch outlet, but understand very low wattage output. You can't power an amp direct with that, but you can add a small wall power supply 6 to 12vdc to power up the amp.

    Speakers
    Carver Amazing Fronts
    CS400i Center
    RT800i's Rears
    Sub Paradigm Servo 15

    Conrad Johnson PV-5 pre-amp
    Parasound Halo A23
    Pioneer 84TXSi AVR
    Pioneer 79Avi DVD
    Sony CX400 CD changer
    Panasonic 42-PX60U Plasma
    WMC Win7 32bit HD DVR

This is the way to go. Get a 12V wall wart, plug it into the switched outlet on the receiver & connect it's output to the 12V trigger on the amp. Turn receiver on, wall wart sends 12V to the amp, bang amp is on.

Or if you happen to have a Harmony One remote you can have it switch zone 2 on and off with the receiver.
