PSW111 vs. DSW Micropro 1000

I just picked up a DSW Micropro 1000 for $280, 1 year old from classifieds.

I have it beside my PSW111, and I have to say that the PSW111 actually sounds better. The Micropro doesn't sound nearly as room filling.

They are currently hooked up with my secondary preouts on my Nad preamp (I have adjusted gains etc).

The DSW only sounds better in the low low bass track portions... The PSW in all other situations.

Songs I've tried:

PSW111 - - much better sounding
Diana Krall - All or nothing at all (very clean distinct walking bass line)
Keith Jarrett - Out of Towners - Song (lots of drum hits)
Dave Matthews - Crush (bass line)
Girl Talk - Here's the thing

DSW MP 1000 - slight edge
Diana Krall - Do I love you - live (deep walking bass line)
Roots - I don't Care (huge bass track)

Am I doing something wrong here??

My Setup:

Pre - Nad C160
Power - Bryston 3B
Nad T512 CD/DVD MP3
Polk RTi6 (currently hooked up)
Polk LSi9

I also took a video... it is modulating a fair amount if I turn it up to around 30 (30/40)

    Is this too much?

I am currently demoing this very sub (the 1000, that is). 25-30 out of 40 has been my general range and it depends on the SIZE of your room. In a small to mid-size but not too big mid-sized room the 1000 can belt out some excellent LFE and low bass. It can lose itself in a LARGER room, though! Can't understand how your 111 is keeping up with it. This thing rivals my 12" 300 watt RMS/600 w. peak, in most all categories except window rattling? Clean bass, tight, reaches very LOW, loud enough for most purposes and wonderfully 'musical' more so than any sub I've owned.

Did you tweak all the settings. The phase switch (0, 90,180, 270). The room placement (1,2,3,4), etc.?

30 is not too much depending on the properties of your room! I found 25 to be adequate in one room and 30 necessary for another?

I have fiddled around with the phase and room placement - not much of a difference I find. I feel it is lacking in the higher/high-mid bass. The lows are fantastic!

I'm wondering if I can combine the L/R from my preout into the LFE channel, rather than separate channels and whether that would make a difference...

It's worth a try! I've used it both off the sub-out on an Onkyo 805 to the LFE in on the sub and off an HK as a pre-amp with an Adcom using the sub-out on the HK into the R channel of the filtered IN on the sub. And setting the 'filtered' crossover to 80hz. I have the room settings to 2 for CORNER (since that's where it is). And the volume to 28/40 in my office. The sub blends almost seamlessly with my LSI-7s with the phase at 0 degrees.

All my lows have been routed to 80hz or below. Where is yours set?

Also, are you on carpet or hardwood floors. And if carpet. How thick? Might be worth putting something under the sub if the carpet is TOO thick? I raised my sub up a bit in the main room because the carpet is more plush?

I just tried. My preouts aren't filtered - it sounded like crap. I realise the LFE is unfiltered as well, so you need to have a receiver/amp that has a specific filtered low freq to use the LFE.

Hardwood floor (as seen in pic)

I find that if I turn it up to listen to jazz, it is WAY to high for any hip hop. I will use the night setting I guess.. although I might just sell it. With the RTi6s, which have a fair amount of LF/Mid Freq for bookshelfs, there is still a huge gap with the DSW MP. This gap is filled with with the PSW111... The PSW is not as clean/smooth on the bottom end, but still sounds beter.

Only other thing I can think of is the sub isn't broken in yet. The original owner only used it for theatre... and if it was used for only a year... I'm wondering if that provided enough to break it in?
