DYI Speaker Stands

I'm thinking of buidling my own speaker stands foir small monitor speakers like totem the ONES or Spendor SA1s (looking on Audiogon). I already have two 24 inch tall 5" x 5" hollow core wood columns which I can fill with lead shot or dry sand. I have to mount on a solid bottom base. My questions are:
* Mapleshade has a 15x12x2 solid maple platform for 50 bucks each unfinished. I was thinking of mounting the 24" wood columns on this platform. Is this a good product and worth the money?
* The stands will be placed on hardwood flloors so I was thinking of using isolations pads rather than spikes. I could buy them from mapleshade for 48 bucks for 8 pads. Seems like a lot. I also found some neoprene and cork isolation pads on a website called Global industries. I could get 8 pads (dimensions 2x2x1) for half the price.
I'm bored with winter and need a project to keep me busy. Anybody have experience building their own stands?

I know. I'm thinking about $250 for materials when all is said and done. At least I can stain them to match my decor and make my wife happy.Rig1 - Totem Hawks, Benchmark HDR, Parasound A21, Sonus, Samsung 52 LCD, Audioquest Type4

Thanks. Is there an advantage of using spikes and protective disks over the isolation pads on hardwood floors?Rig1 - Totem Hawks, Benchmark HDR, Parasound A21, Sonus, Samsung 52 LCD, Audioquest Type4
