FROM NY to DETROIT.......TORONTO, CA....

This is OBVIOUSLY a little scary because of the mass scale of these outages. Definitely makes one speculate....

***Reports*** of a power plant on fire in NY.

Anyone having any problems?

Was just watching the networks.... I heard one reporter say it was a lightening strike at a power generation plant in Niagra... but I only heard that from one out of four stations. All the East Coast feeds from CBS, NBC, ABC, and Fox from the east coast are down on the sat, so I've been watching the West coast feeds.

Here in Central PA, everything's fine and dandy.

Everyone is saying this was NOT terrorism, but merely another failure of the same power grid that crapped out in 1965.

Good to hear it's not terrorism.

Hope Ed (Dr. Spec) isn't affected by this.

Well...I think it's amazing how well the people seem to be handling it so far. It's great. On the other side of the coin...it shows how vulnerable we are and that the power system needs major re-tooling. Maybe these 'special interest' groups will start waking up and stop playing games.

read this for background on the '65 outage-

    http://www.ceet.niu.edu/faculty/vanmeer/outage.htm

    I like this part-

"As a result of this disaster, a great deal of serious planning was done to prevent it from occurring again. Not that a power failure cannot happen, but controls were developed so that one failure cannot propagate to shut down an interstate grid. Sanity dictates that if there is a serious outage, only enough area should be blacked out so that the rest of the grid can continue in service. In addition, every emergency service reviewed its emergency lighting systems. Additional backup systems were installed. And regular testing of emergency backup systems was instituted."

Guess that was all for naught.

Because the outage was at night, there were widespread reports of UFO sightings... we'll see if any develop during this one :-)

Well, I guess I had some problems. Earthlink's DSL network in the northeast went completely went down the ****, so I was stuck with dial up for a while. Oh, the humanity!

Well, it *was* a hairy situation considering I had just reformated the HD in this POS, and I thought it was my fault that it wasn't working

This went way furthur north than Toronto. We got hit in Sudbury and we're about a 4 hours drive north. It supposedly went all the way to Moosenee. Check it out on a map, you'll be surprised. ;)

I'm seeing Radiohead in Toronto tomorrow, I hope everything is still on.

The power's back on in my house but not fully in the city yet.

My power just came back up a couple of hours ago. They're forecasting for the downtown area to be down all weekend.

Burdette what is your opinion here? I'll bet you look at reliability reports for the power company that shows better than .9999 or more?

I agree more ways than 1 here considering I have stood in front of so many zoning boards and local governments than I care to count or remember. I remember getting the **** beat out of me up in Wisconsin because they were convinced the birds were going to die and that lightning was going to strike the tower and travel through a farmers water well and electricute them while in the bath tub. I just shook my head in disbelief and opted for litagation at the state level. Effem!!!

It hit me pretty hard. First the good news: I take public transportation to work and the power went out after I got out of the station! So glad I didn't get stuck in the subway.

The bad news: I work at downtown Toronto. The boss decided to close the place down and there was no way for me to get home. Me and three co-workers decided to walk home. The other two were lucky because the live half way and me and another guy had to go all the way. We couldn't find any taxi and the shuttle busses were packed like sardines. It took almost three hours of walking to get half way home. We stopped by Pizza Pizza and bought the last 5 pieces of pizza then we found a cab. That took us to the parking lot at the subway station where my co worker parked his car and then he gave me a ride home.

I thought getting home was bad enough, but **** man, I couldn't use my system! I became very desperate and decided to get the computer speakers(really crappy) that wouldn't play loud and with few pieces of cardboard and electrical tape, I built large horns for them. Hooked them up to my discman and it was able to play a lot louder and had a lot more bass:). That was cool. My mom thought I was completely nuts.

The power came back on at 2:45am and I finally got to listen to my speakers until 5:00am.

    Here's my Outage adventures. :(

First, I left work early on thursday. :D

Next, I went to my parents house to borrow some candles and stayed there all night just talking with my family. The outage was getting people into the streets walking and reuniting with family. It was pretty cool.

My weekend was totally shot. I travelled to Toronto on Friday for a Radiohead show on saturday. I needed beer and gas for the trip, well the beer store had a crazy line up out the door so I left. I then went to get gas and the line up was even crazier, I left too. I had a quarter of a tank of gas and I was off to Toronto, a 4 and a half hour drive, hoping for a gas station to be open. I did get gas not too far out of my city (Sudbury).

When I got to my friend's house in Oshawa, the power was out. Me and my buddy went looking for ice for the beer(that we picked on the way also). Everywhere was either melted or sold out of ice. We went into a Hotel with a plastic bag and bagged a whole lot of ice for the beer. We got wasted, friday night. Power was on all night.

    Wake up Saturday.....

Go online to check the golf scores....

Go onto a Radiohead message board.....

    Radiohead concert is postponed..............

    Come back to Sudbury...... disapointed.

    Get wasted with my buddies.

    Too bad.................. I'm a little sad ................................ :(

    Ya, it really blows.

Plus...., I sent my 4 extra tickets, overnight delivery, about a 6 hour drive from my house. They didn't get there over night. The people I sold the tickets too were pissed. I was pissed. I was already taking a $50 loss selling the tickets and I might of had to refund the money for the tickets. It was all very ****. Oh well, I'll see Radiohead in a month or so, that's all that matters.

    fireshoes,
Hey man, that was fun:)! Building those horns by candle light made me feel like those smart inventor dudes:).

    Paul,
Sorry to hear about that:(. Something similar happened to me in April. The day before IMMORTAL played here, they were supposed to sign autographs at the downtown HMV. I went there and found out the signing was cancelled because of SARS. Primal Fear and Bob Halford was supposed to be there too. The show still went on the next day. I got to see Pain Museum, Amon Amarth, Carnal Forge, Primal Fear, Immortal(of course!) at the Opera House, but I had to leave befre Halford played. It was getting too late. It was pretty cool, I saw the vocalist for Pain Museum eating at Pizza Pizza on my way home.

How long is the show postponed for? I hope it's not too long. Don't get too wasted when you go to see them. You'll want to remember the show the next day;). I didn't buy any alcohol at the Opera House but brought along a cigarette spiked with MJ:).

The rescheduling is going to be announced in the next 5-10 days. I'm guessing it's going to be Sept. sometime.

I drove back home last night and got wasted.

    Ya you're right.

Anyway, some good news today. I woke up with a phone call from my Mom saying we had a new addition to the family. My sister gave birth to a beautiful little girl. I have one great little nephew (he's 6) and now a beautiful little niece. Woohoo. There's a certain buzz in the family that only comes in great occasions. This is definitely a weekend I'll remember.

    Cheers,

So will you be submitting a pair to Stereophile for review? With the publicity from that, I feel it's only a matter of time until we're all surfing the Club Organ message board, talking about the Organ speakers we got at Best Buy! ;)
