As far as actual all-in-one powered AVR's, I think H/K and Pioneer Elite are the 2 biggest players. But then you get into things like seperates, where there are brands that I've never even heard of because they are rediculously priced ($10k+ for a processor)
    65" Sony X900 (XBR-65X900E)
    Pioneer Elite SC-37

I don't believe there is an answer for that question. Like everthing else audio, its very subjective and depends on the individual listening.

For what speakers? How loud? Music too or just HT? What features? What size area? Last but not least what budget?
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

I agree with Tim above. It's all too subjective and there are too many factors to address, i.e., what does it sound like in Two channel, what kind of DACs are in the unit, how good is its video upconversion or audyssey set up, how many DSPs does it have? Is it 3D capable, how many HDMIs ins/outs does it have? What kind of power are we talking about..? And what about it's sound? Warm, neutral, dynamic, forward....etc. etc. etc. Is it internet capable? Can it receive Pandora, etc.?

We could go on forever, as more and more and more features are cropping up. There is also the question of FEATURE TO PRICE RATIO!

Warranties. Many only have a one or two year warranty and some have a 3 or 5 year warranty? The more I think about this the more I can ADD TO THE LIST. SO let's just stop here!

Its not so much about brand but about what price range he is in and what features (video processing and power) he needs.

In some brackets the one brand win, in other a different brand.......

as stated this is going to be a subjective thing.....

Give us a price range and what he's looking for and perhaps we can give you some options, otherwise this is almost a pointless excercise...

Well, so far so good, no insults have been thrown at you.

Just feel the force Luke

I own the Onkyo 807, now outdated but still very effective for my HT needs and wants.

In my opinion........my favorite pick list for "the best" would be the Integra 80.2 and the Pioneer Elite SC-37 (even though it's 7.1).

As others have pointed out here, "the best" is all relative to need, want and cost vs function.

Why not just ask if cables make a difference, and if they do, what are the best cables?

Seriously, there is no "best AVR". Pioneer, HK, Onkyo, Denon, etc., all have their followings, and are all good. It depends entirely on what you like.

Uh, no. The term was invented in 1927, and H/K wasn't founded until 1953.

Best AVR I heard in my home was the Arcam AVR600, for the money the Pioneer Elite SC-27, and I would assume the NAD receivers would be as nice as their lower end separates that I have. They just have their quirks and glitches at times.

That's not the same as the first hi-fi system. This was in response to "h/k had the first hi-fi system" (paraphrased). That's simply not true. The term was first used in 1927, so that would be when the first hi-fi systems came about. If you want to talk about who released the first integrated receiver, that's a different discussion. Because H/K's first receiver actually kind of sucked by all reports, and was not considered "hi-fi" by audiophiles.

Many receivers have different benefits and are of good quality. Do you have a price range, features you are looking for, listen to HT or Music, multi channel or two channel. Deciding between many receivers comes down to priority and price range. There are many good receivers out there and in a way it is like deciding between with Victoria secret model is the best.
