Wire hookup

I have a Pioneer vsx-515 with no hdmi
I have a X-box 360 hookup direct to the tv via hdmi & fiber optic for sound
direct to receiver
I also have a hd cable box hookup via hdmi direct to the tv & coaxial for sound
direct to the receiver
My question is this a good way?
I'm thinking of upgrading to a Pioneer Elite vsx-31 that has hdmi ins and outs
and go all hdmi & drop all the fiber optic & coaxial & let the receiver switch inputs but would the sound quality improve or stay the same?
Have a cs10 for my center & changing to monitor 60's or TSI 400's for the fronts & monitor 40's or TSI 200's for the rears
If I buy the monitors then maybe upgrade the receiver? or would I be wasting
my money for no real gain?
