Hey guys, I am trying to do a mock up for a 2 car garage w/ a second floor workshop. I want to set up the best floor plan and figure out the cost of building materials, ect. Does anyone know of software that will allow me to do something like this?

Thanks!

I've got it all drawn up (actually as a guest house instead of a workshop). 26x26, two floor, two 7 foot doors, stairs in the back of the garage with an outside entrance.

Is there any good way to estimate lumber/drywall/concrete costs?

What program did you use? There are plugins for some or ruby scripts for sketchup or ifyou used vectorworks or autocad you can assigncost parameters to materials.

If none of the above, excel would be best, especially if you're familiar with construction techniques. Just figure in a stud, top/base plate cost per LF and then similar calcs for beams, joists, flooring, ceiling rock, etc based on areA

I really don't know anything about this, so I did not use any professional applications. I used smart draw to get the general idea for the floor plan. Now that I know it's possible, and have a rough idea for the materials I need, I used prices from home depot to estimate for most everything.

I'm at about 8k without roofing, siding, structural support and trusses. I'm just trying to get a real ball park estimate.

If you have it all drawn up many lumber yards ( and possibly Lowes, Menards) will make you a itemized material list and cost sheet

I used an old version of this to do an addition on my house. http://www.amazon.com/Home-Design-Suite-Deluxe-4-0/dp/B0000639WS IIRC it produces an excel file with all of the materials needed and then you just add the prices. Its fairly easy to use and gives a fair number of options as far as even with how many outlets and lights you want to use.

Thanks guys. I'm gonna try the home design suite and see what happens. If it doesn't work, I will probably have it professionally drawn up and then I can take the plans to different places.
