Hot-Rodded Polk Monitor 7s anyone?

I told myself I'd never sell these, but I'm getting the itch to try something new. I'd rather climb the later than make a lateral move (eyeing some Paradigms), so selling these will help. If I can't move 'em, so be it, but I can only enjoy one pair of speakers at a time...

Polk Monitor 7 Series 2 - Black Ash

Moretite'd & Dynamat'd Drivers
TOOL's Hardware Rings (rings had to be modified to fit, but are working)
Sonicap Capacitors & Mills Resistors
Replaced Binding Posts
SL3000 Tweeters (didn't like them at first, but once the caps broke in they blend really nicely)

Cabinets are in excellent shape for their age, as are the grilles. I've owned about a dozen vintage Polks over the years, and these are undoubtedly in the best condition.

I've got $300 into these, as well as about 6 hrs of work. However, I'm willing to entertain serious local-pickup offers. See some photos here:

I suppose I should post some sort of price...

I will entertain offers of $200. These have to be some of the cleanest Mon7s out there, fellas!

My biggest fear beyond the astronomical cost would be that a magnet would drop off. I don't really want to remove the drivers now that they're sealed up. But I suppose at your risk and your expense, I could... Maybe I could stuff the cabinets with extra foam or something.

These are all that remain of my once modest bedroom rig. Though I may have a job lined up, I have bills coming sooner than a first paycheck.

    $175.00.

Lots of time and money vested into these... I hate to see them go. Hopefully someone local can help a fellow Polkie out, and benefit in the process.

    Larry,
I've given it serious thought after the first poster was interested in shipping. I just don't like the idea... Two large separate boxes, with magnets and caps bouncing around...? Would rather not.

Heck, for how much that would cost, I might as well drive them to you. ;)

I shipped a pair of early 7's, autographed up to Troy for his PF - and I would never do it again. The amount of packing I endured, and the stress of waiting for them to arrive and be opened probably took a year off my life. Never again.

They did make it, but never again. You've got a gem, that you've made one of a kind - if you aren't hard up for the cash, just let 'em soak at your current price. The right buyer will show up eventually.

    Cheers,
    Russ

Never saw your response Russ, but I agree! Thanks for the feedback.

It's been a month, and I've moved these semi-permanently to basement storage. But still available for $175 if someone wants 'em! I don't need the $ as badly anymore, but I do want to get another Sennheiser HDR-180 for my wife so we can watch movies at night without disturbing our sleeping child. :) Would trade straight-up for one of those.

Sounds like a job for the Polk Pony Express...once a regular thing round this board...who knows...once had a pair of 1C's make from New York to Georgia courtesy of some old school Polkies.

BUMP. Keeping them at $175. Eventually someone local will know they're worth that.

Sounds like a good idea...and a bump for you.

The question I have is; people ship speakers all the time on ebay, audiogon, etc. And many arrive in decent shape. I received a couple of sets that were OK.

Why is it that Polks, especially 'vintage' Polks, just don't hold up? Is it just the, pardon my French (cheaply glued on magnets on most vintage mids?) or the packing or..?

Think about how many speakers Polk ebay's site ships every week, if they all got trashed Polk would go bankrupt!

I don't mean to go on about this because I did follow the general advice and picked up my SDAs and Monitor 5s myself. But I did have LSIs shipped and Rtis, etc. with no problems.

I guess what I'm saying is that you can ship a pair of Dynaco A25s and they arrive fine. You ship some Monitors and 'all the magnets' fall off? Not good press there.

I have shipped many drivers since my 2+ years being here and all of them made it just fine but I am anal about how I pack things for shipping. I have also had drivers shipped to me with no problems as well. Harry shipped me a set of CRS+'s with no issues.

With that said the only polks I wouldn't ship is any of the big boy SDA's and other tower speakers not because I am afraid of drivers not making it more because it's a pain in the ****. I trust my packing skills to know that they will make it.

Now receiving big speakers I would rather pick them up unless I know who is shipping them to me not everyone has good packing skills and sometimes people will trust the shipping company just a little to much..

BUMP for a nice set of speakers and the price is killer for what one will get..

Thanks guys. Truth is, I don't trust myself to pack them... and to pack them right, it would require a considerable investment of time and funds. I'd rather have someone either make the drive or already be local and spare the cost and hassle of shipping.

The other thing is TOOL's rings... for some reason they didn't fit quite right in mine so I had to break them into pieces to make them work. Plus, the moretite has surely sealed them pretty well. I'd have to undo all that to get inside the cabs and pad.

Wow... 8 months since I've been even somewhat active on this forum. Kinda bums me out... I miss the Polkies.

These speakers have been wrapped in plastic in my basement all winter. As before, I don't need to sell them. But I honestly don't know when I'll have the chance to enjoy them again. My bedroom rig is permanently dismantled, and I mostly use my Sennheiser RS180s for active listening in the main room.

Anyone local wanna give these a run?

Okay guys, it's time to move these to a new loving owner. I've been using them in my new basement HT rig... they're awesome but I've got my eye on somethin' else...

$150.00!! The caps alone cost that much.
