I'm not sure how it works when it is a combo charge/debit card. I know debit cards can be "run" as credit cards, but I highly doubt that changes any rules as far as it actually being a debit card. I believe people would still have access to "your" money--and that's the big downfall with debit cards.

There is no real difference to the user how a debit card is ran. So if you run it as credit you don't have to put a pin number in which for some people is easier. Then others like to put their pin number in. Both come out of your account the same way and both will put the hold on the funds the same way. Its not that one is delayed more than another.

It does make a difference to the bank and the merchant though when things are run of debt vs credit. If you use it as credit the merchant has to see a higher fee for the processing of the transaction. This is why they often have the machine say please enter your pin right away because then it charges the merchant less because of the pin based transaction.

You can still get ATM cards that are only able to be used at an ATM. Banks just don't advertise them as much as most people just get a debit card due to the convience factor. You then don't have to write checks, which then if the bank offers a free box of checks every year a person is less likely to use them which then saves the bank cost.

I can tell you at least one place where this is not true : gas pumps. If I pay at the gas pump (which I always do because I'm not retarded), and I use my debit card (which I always do because at the moment I don't have a credit card), it asks "is this a debit card." If I say no, and run it as a credit card, and get home and check my online balance, it'll have a 1 dollar hold from the gas station, and I have to wait three days or wahtever for the real charge to show up (I f**king hate this, btw). If I say yes, and it runs as a debit card, the exact amount of the transaction is immediately taken out.

No idea why, just offering up a data point.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Does "Daves Plan" happen to mention that you can have a credit card without being in credit debt? Though it does require some self-discipline.

Dave believes it is a crutch that you always know you have and therefore will use it if need be. With this extra confidence behind you it is much easier not to have the proper backup savings etc.

So, there are at least 4 Dave enthusiasts here. Awesome!

I've used that card three times in the last two weeks, two as credit, one as debit.

Like Bizill said, I'm betting I got hit by a card scammer at the gas pump. There's been a lot of news about it here lately, I guess I'll pay cash for gas for a while.

RiverRat......do you live on the Northside or in Oracle? There have been a huge rash of gas stations getting hit with ID theft at the gas pump. Somehow people are putting "phishing" software inside the pumps computers and stealing peoples CC #'s.

Nevermind....LOL.....should have read all the posts.
