Polk LS70 question

A friend of a friend has a set of the "vintage" polk LS70's. They are kind of old but not abused.

Is there any reason to stay away from an older speaker such as possible deterioration or somthing like that?

I will be using these for home theater and some music. He wants 175 for the pair. Seems like a good price? I was also considering building some aviatrix speakers that use two each 5.25 dayton drivers each and have heard good things about them.

Any comments would be appreciated.

I have never heard the LS70's. I own the 50's and I love them. The 90's are highly regarded. What I've heard about the 70's is they are not as smooth as the others, somewhat bloated in the midrange. Good price though, you may like them...

Agree with Ken, I have the 50's and 90's doing surround duty. I've never heard the 70's but for the price, they'd probably do fine as mains til you find something better and move to 70's to surround duty. Any pics??

I have a pair of LS70's that I bought new in the early '90's. I have no plans to part with them. They are a great set of speakers and I now use them as my mains in my HT. I personally would snap them up for that price.

No pics, I have read similar comments about the 70s but the people who do have them all seem to love them. It's a new set up for my basement. Will start with a high end onkyo reciever and then maybe add an amp later. The rears have to be in wall. I guess if I go this route I will need to locate a cs350 from what I have read.

Oh I will have a 12" powered sub also.

Do the speakers go bad with age?

They have rubber surrounds on the drivers, they don't rot. I owned the 70's before the 90's and I loved them. The only difference between 70's and 90's is the 90's dig a little deeper. Through the mids and highs they all sound great. Dude, ur talking $175. Hook them up, drive them hard, and enjoy the sweet polk sound.

+1, you're getting a hell of a lot of speakers for $175.00 that will blow away a number of new speakers at twice that price.

Perfect, thanks for the help guys. I know 175 is not much cash at all so im sure I will be happy with them. I also just noticed newegg has the moniter 60s for 109 each now. But for Home Theater I immagine the LS70s will blow the moniter 60s away? Just making sure.

If you don't want them, I could use another pair. Can't have too many Polk Audio quality speakers.

I'm probably going to go for them based on ur comments. Are they much better than the monitor 60s? Wife likes those better of course lol.

Real polkies don't listen to their wives about such concerns. (Don't tell my wife I said that.)

I have not listened to the M60's but looking at the specs, the LS70's reach a little lower, handle more power and I can assure you they weigh more. Have I mentioned how much I love mine?

The LS70's are in a different league than the Monitors. Top of the line at their time.

Tried to link a scan to the manual but it wouldn't let me because I had already linked it in another thread

It's in here. Might be helpful if the seller doesn't have one for ya...
