So I sold off the old receivers this weekend, Yamaha HTR-5280 and Pioneer Elite VSX-27TX and needed something to take the slots. I usually only run the front stage in the smaller living room so I figured I would give the Adcom 2535 a go since I picked it up last weekend and it's been sitting on the floor. As you Adcom junkies know this unit is 60w x 4 or 60x2 + 200w bridged. I ran it in bridged mode to give the center channel a full 200w. I could have made a full 5 channels if I added the Adcom GFA-555 to the mix, but I wanted to keep it simple.
Well I pulled the Rotel RSP 1068 off the shelf and hooked up the preamp channels to the Adcom, and all the other associated wiring from the bluray and cable box. Which movie should I use? Lately the girlfriend has become increasingly tired of Wall-E since it's the main movie I ever put in to test. We tried Hancock, and it was pretty good. Paired with the Yamaha YST-SW315 that I traded some vintage Yamaha gear for, the sound was very forward and the center channel was amazingly clear. The power was felt in the voices, and the walls. I swapped out for Saving Private Ryan on BluRay and gave it a go. The Omaha Beach scene was enthralling. Bullets were whizzing by, and that's with no surround channels. The mortar explosions shook the entire room.
I am very impressed with the Rotel's processing, as well as the Adcom's power. The Yamaha HTR-5280 had tons of power, more so than the Pioneer 27TX...but this was a whole new level of power, and clarity. I wish I had the HDMI version of this 7.1 Pre-amp. I guess I could hook up my BDP-05fd with analog out to get the lossless codecs, this preamp has two 7.1 inputs on it.
I think I'll keep the separates approach for now. The only real downside is the amp doesn't have a 12v trigger on it, so I can't use the Harmony remote to turn it on....
