Brick or Trick ?

On my recent Marantz acquisition (still in mail, actually, here by Saturday) I was on my personal email promoting my new toy.
I got a reply from my uncle, he didn't know I was in the market and offered up for sale his Sansui G-33000, spec sheet here:http://www.classic-audio.com/sansui-g33000-p-253.html

So, is this a brick or a trick old receiver I should scoop up ?
I do see it being able to take over dining room duty, but would have to harness the power I would think, or get new speakers capable of handling, or just play real low with max volume being quite low, right ?

Let me know your thoughts.
My uncle wanted 1k, but believe I can talk him to 850 being his oldest nephew.
He bought second hand himself, and has only that piece, to which only headphones have been hooked to it.

Worth it ?

That Sansui weighs as much as I do, and outputs the same as my home stereo does into one channel... X2...

    Definitely worth it...

That thing looks like a beast.. it would be fun to at least get him to let you try it 1st and go from there.

That thing is huge! What a sweet looking piece of gear. The collect-ability of that thing has to be off the charts. I would agree with THM on getting your ears on it. I bet some cleaning of the pots and you would be all set. Maybe someone can get you the BB value. I wonder if that beast is common ground? Even if it isn't an A1 might work with it depending on which model.

The unit has two cooling fans. I hope it itself doesn't sound loud.

I would jump all over that thing. Nothing sounds like those older receivers.

I miss my old Pioneer SX-1280. If I only knew how hard it would be to find that sound again.

While a very nice receiver in it's own right, and built like a tank, the price is still a tad high imho. In the g series, the 5000 on up is the most sought after. Google it, for reference. I'm thinking around 5-600 hundies would be ball park. Also check e-bay for prices of recently sold units.

There are fools that will pay $3-$4k for that thing if you buy and decide to flip it.

Yes, do check ebay. I think you'll be surprised.

A year ago, I sold my G-8000 for $840.00. The G33000 is the biggest and
baddest of the G series. Collectors item for sure and it sounded great.
And they are classy looking. But.... no remote.

Price might be a little high considering it is your uncle; definitely not outrageous. $850 would be a for sure no-brainer deal.

Sansui made, IMO, some of the sweetest looking vintage gear.

I have to wait reimbursement from the junk Sony, and the dead in the water Marantz refurb I got, but then I will scoop it up.

    Thanks.

Tomorrow, I'll hook my old Pioneer (dining room receiver) to my HT for the time being. I have an old junker RCA in the garage to take over dining room duties for now until reimbursement(s).

But, I'll email my uncle tonight and tell him I will take it. Besides, I have to also bring him (or he comes over) his tires for his truck. I bought tires for him at cost and they are taking up space in my garage. Three good reasons to get together, including the obvious family get together, long overdue, due to scheduling conflicts.

    Thanks again everyone.
I'll report the quality, which I am sure will be superfantastic.

Karma working good, even though HT living room stereos have not, so far. My VSX-406 is bailing me out, HT circa 1997, putting out alright sound for its capabilities, 3.1 posing as a 5.1, not as good as the STR-DN1000, and definitely not the MarantzSR6005 sound or power, but holding its own. Had to confirm my Polk's were ok, and they are fine, just two bad receivers from the vendors was all.
Anyway, the karma working out, is my uncle is taking my cousin to Concord today, and as luck has it, he is bringing the beastly Sansui to me and we are to meet and swap out, his tires and my new receiver. And, pay him when I can, no rush.
    That is superfantastic.
After some time now through Tuesday, confirming all is well with my living room monitors, I will probably juggle the 60's to the dining room and the 40's for my new fronts on the Pioneer VSX-406. That is, if I cannot have the Sansui as my new HT.
Which, the Sansui in the dining room will work fine, as I usually use dining room for music only duties.
Then, once reimbursed from Sony and Accessories for less (still awaiting approval there from A4L), Sony's been approved for reimburse, pay the uncle off, then back on my quest for new HT.
    Maybe.
I'll report how the Sansui and include photos.
Probably be in the market for some big A__ speakers for the Sansui first, right ?

Love the toy factor in our lives, don't we ?

Thanks all for your help in this.

I got it, but right now have an awful lot ongoing.
I will get pics up soon, as it does need some cleaning first (yellowed and seemingly never gently cleaned ever)
I don't have speakers for it, and really want to look at a manual of some form.

But, from the more educated audiophiles here, would I be ok hooking my Monitor 60's on the A channel and the dining room and outdoor speakers on the B channel ?
Of course with discretion in mind and not turning it up too loud.
The meters on the unit show a nice graduation, looks pretty close to the G-22000, except it is a G-33000.
The max on the meter is 600:eek:
    per channel:eek::eek:
Of course, the lower wattage graduations are more prevalent and a wider dispersement or accuracy width. Also, the volume or -db knob is also very fine, and the tuner knob takes me back.

I'll get it hooked soon and photos and report.
Once up and running, if the folks at polk need some mac daddy testing, I can do it soon.
