Not a priority movie on my rental list either, I don't think you will ask a friend to watch this movie to show off your HT system.

Just sort of a basic question here.. what is it about? What is the story?

Plot Outline: Murderesses Velma Kelly (Who blanked out and killed her cheating husband) and Roxie Hart (Who killed her boyfriend in a jealous rage) strive for fame at any costs including scandal and lies in 1920s Chicago.

It's a kind of movie that you'll probably enjoy to watch at the theater if you like the musical movie type, but I doubt that you will take times to watch it twice and definitely not intend for home HT system or ever become a reference disc, but it may be a collectible item for oscar fans...

Watched last night, very good transfer, excellent use of color and shadow. This is a must see in my book although their are no fx I felt it was an excellent HT disc, full of extremely talented actors/dancer/singers. I really enjoyed the Mr. Cellaphane dance.

This is actually a musical play and would be best seen on Broadway or your areas best playhouse, but I enjoyed the disc, different seeing R. Gere dance and sing--did he really sing??

Of course their is the satire of our justice system to reflect upon and the fact that in this pic 5,000 is the magic number.

    I have to be honest.

My Fiance and I went to the store last night and we saw the DVD and I just decided to pick it up to make her happy. I know she likes musicals, although in general, I can't stand them.

Boy, was I suprised. They had a DTS track on it and the sound was phenomonal. I think the reason this movie did as well as it did was because there was NO down time. It held my interest at all times and the story was good.

On top of that, this IS a good HT disc. This is a movie I would use to show off a different dynamic of my system. The rapid response of all the speakers.

As far as singing...I think all the actors were singing. Richard Gere's voice wasn't that great, but the others suprised me.

Latiffa & Mya are both real life singers....and they all performed on some awards show. Who knows, but I'm 99.9% sure they all sing.

Yes all of the actors/performers were multi-talented. Gere did sing and that was him tap dancing. In the special features there is a song called No Class that was cut from the movie, it has Zeta and QL singing a duet of sorts and it is really good, check it out.

I really did not want to see this movie, but the wife tricked me. I was pleasantly suprised at how well shot it was. The soundtrack was great, and above average perfomances by damn near everyone in the movie. It was very unlike most of them to be dancing and singing, that in itself is kinda neat to watch.

My highlight was the many lighting tricks and camera work that was executed...all to great effect.

Good movie, worth buying. Wife loved it. :D

    Demiurge

Is that Phaedrus from "Zen and the Art of.....".

A good change may be to check out "Aria", 8 director's interpretation of opera's sometimes most famous arias.

This movie changed my view of opera completely.

Borrowed it and spun it last night.

I guess the best way to sum it up, boring. I was in the mood, I was alone, the volume was cranked and all the praise had me hyped and ready to go. I was let down. Nothing here to grab you and hold you to the movie. The songs were lack luster and average at best. Some settings were very nice, the dancing was good, but the characters...all wrong. I could not get into any of them, they did not fit the parts, except for maybe KZ Jones, a little. Gear and Zellweger did not fit at all. One thing this movie did was prove Gear cannot sing.

Although different than Moulin Rouge, it is also very similar. It's a movie that will forever ride the coat-tails of MR. MR has so much character, so much excitement, the songs were outstanding, the voices and characters all too perfect and fit the theme and mood of the movie.

    Peace Out~:D

Thanks for the heads up Ron!

I know to avoid this now. I thought Moulin Rouge SUCKED BIGTIME! I'm sorry I bought it. Time to trade it in and get credit toward another movie.
    No excuses!

After watching Moulin Rouge for about 15 minutes my Honey Ruthie and I looked at each other and said this sucks. Pressed the stop button and did something else. I hope Chicago is better because I like musicals.

If you are interested in musicals that are very different try "Hedwig and the Angry Inch". Try at least two songs before giving up however! Now, you know, I like Zappa, so expect something very different. The songs play very well loud also.

"The Story Of Love" tells it all.

Turn all the knobs to the right as far as they will go and have a blast.

I'm confused. Here you state doing something you don't even do yourself. You did not even make it passed the first few songs in Moulin Rouge and you turned it off, yet your telling us to make sure we make it though the first few song in Hedwig before turning it off?

I just can't see how one can judge a movie from only watching the first few minutes. As much as I did not like Chicago, I gave it my full attention.

As for Moulin Rouge, you must get through the first 30, once in I was hooked. Best movie-musical I've seen so far. Everything works with this movie, the song medly's, the sets, the cast. It's all there and it's done extremely well.

You are correct. I may have been in a funny mood. I will check out "Moulin Rouge" again.

I even love listening to 1950's musical "Carousel".
