dvdcd not seeing most dvds

sony dvpcx850d was part of a bunch of gear i bought, plays cds fine, out of 4 or 5 dvds i have tried, it only sees one, a 70s rock compilation, it stutters a good bit, 1 or 2 minutes then stopping 4 or 5 seconds, tried blowing off laser, dont think its worth paying to have it looked at.
Would buying a cleaner disc have a chance of helping, also i can get to the laser, can a cotton swab with water or windex be used on that.
by the way, dont you know 10 years or so ago, someone was tickled to get this thing home.
Kinda like seeing an old beat up car going down the road and knowing someone once drove it off the showroom floor proud as a peacock
