In 5-10 years it will probably be worthless just like geocities, delicious, myspace, and friendster.

Facebook will be around forever I think

The best thing about it is that it gives the wifes somthing to do while we can browse and listen to audio

It won't be around forever (that's ludicrous, it's only a few years old NOW), but it likely will be around long enough for someone to make a good chunk of money off of it. 60 billion worth? Who knows?

And I also don't pay attention to Internet ads (and in fact block a good majoirty of them, thanks to AdBlock) but you and I are NOT in the majority.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I'm guessing someone said the same thing about My Space before FB came along.

FB definitely has a much deeper foothold, but I'm not convinced it'll be around forever, much less 20 years from now.

I'm not even convinced that we'll have pc's (as we know them) at that time. I'd expect something more along the lines of google tv that flows through to your phone too. Basically, a "multimedia interface that can be accessed anywhere."

But back to the original point.......$60B? Holy cow. For some perspective however, Apple's mkt cap is in the $300B+ range. Google is in the $200B range. Microsoft is around $200B or so.

And I'm assuming the $60B for FB is their Enterprise value, and not just the mkt value of their shares.

Still, that's a wad of money...

I wouldn't want to explain to the board and CFO how I was going to monetize that acquisition! That's a big number.

I'd bet money that something will replace it inside of 5 years and then it will be virtually worthless (pun intended). Lifespan of any business on the net very short. Only a few have survived long term. Amazon, eBay, google being a few of the exceptions. Business's with websites is a different thing. Stuff like facebook, myspace, twitter are fads and when the new cool social network thing comes along people will flock en mass to it.

...i think it will be around for a long time because it has a base , and because it has the money to evolve into the next new thing.

I think some sort of virtual reality will replace FB. Imagine a site with various stores, parks or events and you will find your friends sitting at a virtual starbucks.

Hey, if you care about the general economy, a 60 billion dollar industry that lives in the US is relatively important, ri ght?

Sure it is, a jobs a job, right? But I wouldn't be bending over backwards to bail them out once they started going downhill. If a 60 billion social networking company is that important, you would think a 500 billion dollar oil industry might hold more water, seeing that they actually produce something. If FB went away tomarrow, the only thing lost would be jobs. If the oil industry went away overnight, total collapse. I guess you can say the laws of supply and demand apply. Except a country such as ours with over 300 million people, the demand is here, but we are not the ones on the supply side, generaly speaking.
