finally got a new receiver

Well, after a couple months of debating i picked up a "new to me" receiver. I was looking at spending up to $900 or so on a new unit, but i found a used pioneer for $349. I bought a very nice used vsx72txv from Rowe photo and video today. I think i got a great deal for the money, and i'm sure i'll be happy for a long time to come.
The only concerns i have are with the possible hdmi switching issues. It seems that some people have had problems with certain components, like cable boxes. Hopefully i won't have these issues, because the unit has everything else i need.
If anyone has any experience with this model, feel free to chime in with any advice you might have.

Congrats on your new to you reciever. I think you will be happy. I think the older Pioneer Elites are better than some of the new stuff comming out. I have an older model than yours and I love it.

Make sure to let us know your impressions.

Go 1120 for pre-outs but it's going to be about $200 more right now ($550). If you are patient the price will drop. I got mine for $472 with an online code.

Ok, here's a quick update and review. First off, i love this receiver. While there are a few negative reviews out there, i have only had one setback. The bass output to the sub does seem a little "light". After messing with the setup for a while, i got it to where i'm happy with it though. I will however, continue to fine tune everything until it's perfect.
Speaking of fine tuning............. this unit is amazing. I thought i was happy with my new tsi400's, but after tweaking the eq settings they sound like completely different speakers. This receiver has controls for setting up each channel individually, and i haven't even gotten that deep into it yet.
I must add that i ended up buying new rear surround speakers. I got a set of tsi100's for a great price, so i jumped on them. Also, while trying to set up the receiver for movies my dvd player died. I took this opportunity to buy a samsung blu-ray player.
This thing is awesome. Not only does it play bd's and dvd's, but it has internet access as well. If anyone is in the market for one, the samsung bd-c5500 is on sale at best buy for $110 down from $180.
To summarize, if you have a chance to get a used elite receiver for a deal............
jump on it. This thing rocks.

Congrats! I noticed that your Elite has the Air Studios logo on it. I've heard some Elite SACD/CDPs with those tweaks and was quite impressed with them! Also GOOD power there for your speaker set.

Well, i finally have a couple questions. there's two things i haven't figured out yet.
First is............ i can only get the osd to work through the s-video output. I was under the assumption that it would work through the hdmi out as well.
Secondly........ I had my ps2 hooked to the component input, but couldn't get it to come out through the hdmi either. It does come out the s-video though. These two problems may be related.
If anyone knows the answers to these two problems, i'd love some input.

You may need to look at and assign imputs according to what you have hooked up on the back of tyhe reciever. As this is a used unit, the previous owner may have assigned imputs a little different than the default settings. Page 61 and page 62 of your manual explains how this is done. Here is a link to the manual,if you don't have one.

Thanks for the info. I do have the manual, and did re-assign the ps2 and bluray player. It seems that only the hdmi inputs will be output through the hdmi. I'll keep looking till i find the answers, although it's not a deal breaker if it doesn't work out.

Read the note at the bottom of page 61 of your manual. It states that if you use component input on your avr, then you will have to use component from avr to tv (if video conversion is turned off in the av settings) It explains how to turn it on and off on page 64 of the manual.

The Elite receiver can't transcode a component input to hdmi out? I had the same problem on my Yamaha.

I have the VSX-84TXSi which is very similar but with a couple other options. It's very good as far as receivers go, in my experience, and you got it for a good price. The Menus can be a pain and a little counter intuitive, but the manual is your friend! I'll watch this thread and help any way I can. reno explained your first issue pretty well. let us know how it works out.

thanks guys. I really don't care about the ps2 passing through, it's ok the way it is. I'm just baffled on how to get the osd to show up in hdmi. I guess it's possible that it will only work through the s-video. I was just hoping that it would work the other way so i don't have to change the source on the tv to make adjustments while watching a disc.
As far as the performance goes........ i watched the second transformers movie today, and WOW. I had the master volume set at -10, and it was perfect. There have been a lot of complaints as far as it not putting out enough bass. Well, let me tell you... it does. The best way i can explain it is.... it's not boomy, like a rap song; it's tight and very loud/low when it needs to be.

If you have component imput on you tv, video quality will be better than s-video.

i do, but i can only get the osd to show up through the s-video. I don't think the display needs to be any better. As far as the bluray goes, that's got an hdmi cable so i'm good there.

I wonder if perhaps the issue is with the tv.

All the inputs on the tv are working. I think that the receiver only sends the osd through the s-video output. It's the only " monitor out" on the receiver.
