silly question(?) - monitor 60s as bookshelf speakers?

I was wondering, would it be totally silly to use monitor 60s as bookshelf speakers? If I had these and put them on the floor they'd be concealed behind a sofa. If on a shelf 60" off the ground, they'd clear the sofa - but of course the top speakers would be rather high up.

Please forgive my rather warped ideas!

Just put your sofa on 35 inch blocks and it would be perfect! What you want to do is get the tweeters as close to ear level as possible. A little higher is OK. The 60s are tall enough. If you put them up on another pedistal, a catastrophy is in the making! In your situation, Monitor 30s or 40s would work much better.
Things are more like they are now than they ever will be!

Can you walk behind the sofa? If not than why can't you put them on a stand? I have RT600i's for back speakers with the same sofa issue and put them on a 6" stand. You can't go behind my sofa so no fear of falling speakers.

Just hang them upside down from the ceiling with the tweeters at ear level.

haha! I like that idea, that's pretty innovative.

Another alternative is sell the m60s and get the right speakers... that's what I would do. In my experience bandaiding stuff just gets me into trouble and I end up breaking stuff accidentally... that's just my opinion thought....

60" above the floor? Are you using them as SURROUNDS? If so, get some M-40s, you don't need towers back there?

If not, just raise, at least the tweeters above ear level (again if surrounds). The entire speaker does not need to clear your sofa.

I don't actually have any Monitor 60s - I'm just thought the 60s would be better than the 40s, especially for bass response. (And, being frugal/mean, I like the prices the various Monitors are selling for...)

For surrounds your not going to need the extra woofers for bass response. Your surrounds dont produce much in the way of bass to begin with (as compared to your fronts and even more so your sub). I have used R50's (floorstanders for surrounds) and I currently have 40's. I wish I had purchased 30's instead. It would have saved me from having to purchase mounts (an extra 50) as well as the speakers (which cost more than the 30s). Get the 30's for your surrounds.

The bass response your thinking about should be coming from your sub. So take the difference between the 30's and 60's and add it to whatever budget you have for a sub. If you can get two subs that would be even better. Helps tame any room modes/null areas you have. With that said one good sub is better than two semi good subs.

From Polks line I would go with nothing under a PSW505 (the DSW lineup is good too). So if you can go with a single (or even dual) PSW505's you will be fine.
