We just got my wife a new iPhone and she is loving it. I do not have a smart phone myself.

For those that do have the iPhone, what do you suggest for Apps? Fun, practical and/or useful. What have you been using?

Thanks.

As an alternative to Shazaam I'd like to suggest SoundHound.
As an alternative to pic2shop I'd like to suggest RedLaser.

THose aren't free alternatives, they both carry a small fee I believe, but I do prefer both of those to the ones listed, just my $.02

I need a music player alternate. I bought FluxTunes but don't like it and prefer the built in player for its simplicity. The problem is that the basic player is constantly rotating on me (harder to change volume or progress and buttons are smaller), has small buttons, and constantly hides the progress bar. Any suggestions?

Bob's list is pretty good. Other stuff I like (don't remember if any of these are on his list):
    - Pocket Tanks
    - SpiderFree
    - Alchemy
    - Wimp.com
    - CNBC RT
    - Spy Calc (for hiding images and videos)
    - Solitaire Pro was recently offered for free but I don't use it much,

Please share which apps you like after you get familiar with them.

Assuming you're running iOS4+, if you double tap at the home screen to bring up the multitasking bar, and then swipe to the right, to bring up the mini-player, there's a button on the far left (looks like a twirly arrow in a box) that locks the rotation. There might be a way to do it in settings too, but it's the same thing.

That's a global setting. There are some applications that I want in landscape. So switching back and forth is a pain. Some apps have a specific setting for locking the orientation that I wish the default music player hide.

Finally, there's still the issue with hiding of the progress bar. Why would it do that just to show more white space?

I'll go ahead and get the obligatory "Android is better" post in now to save us all the wait.

On topic, I like that iOS4 lets you lock the rotation now, had to jailbreak my phone to get that in the past.

I agree, not a perfect solution, just wanted to make sure you were aware of it. I haven't tried many other music players, because for the most part I just fire up a playlist and if I need to skip I use the mini-player.

Oh and I also hate apps that unnecessarily hide the status bar.
