^ Yup, true of cars and amps... but not that high of a percentage of either. The big difference is wear and tear on a car vs. an amp.

    photo,
    Look used... Be patient...

    Here... audiogon... ebay...

With careful shopping in the used market, you cannot go wrong, because you can resell what you don't like for near the same, and sometimes more, than what you paid.

Quality of parts used, labor costs, advertising. Amp tech has come up over the years, you never had ice amps for the home before. Think of it like a car, that costs more every year, yet the tech isn't all that different. Sure, they may have more electronics for the bells and whistles, but you still have the same design, minus hybrids of coarse.
Also, just like a car, audio gear can come down in value just as fast on the used market, thats where the deals are imho.

I guess we cant compare cars with amps. Atleast, auto industry can justify that labor cost (a.k.a union rip off) is getting expensive. Having said that, even if the car plants are fully automated with robots and if the raw materials come down 50% in price, still the car prices would never come down, coz the auto industry did a very good job of setting the price points and getting the buyers convinced, no questions asked.

Amplifiers=Toroidals transformer +bunch of caps + transistors. Nothing revolutionary has happened in this tech in the last decade. And I am pretty sure the volume of sales would certainly have certainly increased due to the popularity of home cinemas and affordable speakers. Products like plasma tvs and DSLRs were out of reach before 10 years but any joe can afford to get one now.

Even the R&D cost of these amps would have been recouped years ago. So what is making these expensive ?

I believe these amp prices are artificially inflated with no real competition. It is like UPS and FEDEX claiming they are competitors, while having almost same pricing for their services.

Ok, I am done with my weekend rant...Lol
