Ads speakers

I know this is a Polk forum but someone once posted here to buy every ADS speaker you could find. There are some I've passed up but I do have the 710s, 810s and 880s and if I find more of these at a reasonable price I'll probably buy them although I already have more speakers than I need. But when has "need" ever been a requirement for more vintage gear. I'm sure I'm not the only one here who loves ADS speakers and I'd like to hear about what you have.
Added as a requisite: I also love Polk and have several!:smile:

    That might have been me.

I sure loves me some A/D/S's

I now have, or have had:

    L-10's
    L-420's
    L-520's
    L-570's
    L-620's
    L-810 (two pairs)
    L-910

I would like to find some L-710, and some "biggies" like L-1230's, L-1530's or L-2030's

Buy every one you can get your hands on

The only ones on your list I have are the 810s. Those 910s must be massive!
The 710s and 810s are very good. The L880 is s great speaker. I'm wrong.....I also have the 570s. I'm looking to buy another pair of 710s and if I can find a really nice pair of 810s and 880s. Right now I've got one Polk Monitor hooked up on the right and an 810 hooked up on the left. Plucked or picked metal strings seem to be more clear on the 810. A pair of stands for the 810s sold for around $200 on the bay week before last! I bid a little over $100 and stopped.

The 910's were beasts, right around 100 lbs each. Even though they were phyically big, they also felt like they filled with concrete.

One advantage of the 910's was supposed to be that they had the tweeter and midrange arranged in a vertical arrangement rather that side by side as in the 710's and 810's.

The 570's that you have are really one of my favorites, especially when augmented with a quick/musical subwoofer.

The guy I bought my L-910's had the special cast metal pivoting legs but said he threw them away (UGGGGGH!).

I think I might have bid on the same L-710/L-810 stands, but they went for a very high price as I remember.

Nice to hear from someone who also thinks the ADS "sound" is something special.

Very good loudspeakers. I have a nice pair of L-710s and a slightly less nice pair of L-420s (one missing its perf metal grille).

Among the smoothest, most non-fatiguing speakers to listen to that I know of are the vintage ads loudspeakers.

When they were new (and truth be told), they'd have been my choice over Polk Monitor Series 7As, but the ads were significantly more 'spensive.

Oh, back in about 1988, I had pretty much narrowed down my choice to a pair of A/D/S speakers. I don't remember which model, but they were in my budget, which at the time was about $500/speaker. When I went to solidify the deal, the salesman I had been working with said that before I purchased there was one more pair of speakers I should listen to. I auditioned them with the same electronics. What I loved about the A/D/S was the precision, especially the tight bass, and very clean sound. A really nice speaker, and one in which I would have been totally satisified. But I ended up purchasing the 'new' arrivals - the most unbelievable sound stage I had ever heard. Maybe not quit as precise, but that sound stage was awesome. So I purchased my Polk 2B's that I have had ever since. But if I had room for another pair of speakers, those A/D/S's bring back some fond memories..
SDA SRS modded: X’ovrd, de-polyed, inductorized, interconnectorized, re-posted, dynamited, RDO’d, spiked, gasketed, ringed (Larry's), and grill cloth blinged! Done this on my own? Not a chance. Thanks to Raife and all who forged easy to follow upgrades. At least a 100% improvement in sound and my personal listening pleasure! :cheesygrin:Pass XP-10 preamp, Parasound A21 amp, Pioneer Elite DV-58AV (Ric Shultz modded), Audioquest Sky IC's, No longer need my Sunfire sub after mods...

I'm a big fan of the vintage ADS sound. I have 2 pairs of 910s and 1 pair each of 980s and 710s.

FWIW (and all things considered) I like the "-00" and "-10" ads models better than the "-80" models... but the latter certainly ain't bad!

The modest little L420 two-ways are just astonishing in terms of accuracy, smoothness, and (surprisingly) sensitivity... a push-pull EL84 amplifier (ca. 12 wpc) such as the modest little Dynaco SCA-35 is superb with them.

My L-710s were found on the "Yankee Swap pile" at our town dump a few years back; given that, they're in amazingly good condition and sound fabulous.

    Leroy,

I know you love your Def Tech's.

It would be interesting to see how new Def Techs sound compared to "old" ADS's on music.

    Mabe you will convert me?

I seem to trend toward old/vintage equipment and you tend toward new/modern.

Hmmmm, maybe that's because I'm old/vintage and you are.....

    One pr. of L-620's.

Had a few sets (mini speakers to a 1280 towers I think)and thought the L-710's were the clearest sound. I just heard a set of Avid speakers that had that kind of clarity too. Also a high quality made speaker.

When I was in Germany from 72-76 the BX carried Avid speakers and they sounded very nice. I finally chose AR2ax over the Avid but would have been very happy with the Avid. Back then they offered colored grilles......the orange ones stood out among the browns and tans...........a little too bright for my tastes. I sold the ARs around 96 for $75.........I'd but them back for $75 with out even thinking about it. I bet I've thrown away a hundred or more Ads and brochures that are selling on e-bay for $12-$24 and more.
You never know what to hang onto. I'll be keeping the speakers I have. I need a revolving stage with my electronics and speakers:biggrin:Then I wouldn't have to lift everything..............somehow they get heavier every year.........sorta like the recoil of my S&W 44 magnum.

THe Avids are also pretty good; not in the class of the ads though if you ask me.
(I have a pair of Avid 102 speakers; two-ways with CTS(?) woofers and Philips polycarbonate dome tweeters.

IIRC Those are dome Peerless midrange speakers, I had some Dynaudio dome midrange speakers. They were SUPER EXCELLENT speakers. I've never heard another on par with them.

The 2030s were designed to be placed against the backwall. Which is a nice feature in such a large speaker.

  • Yes, love my ADS 710 and especially my 910's. I have also a pair of monitor 10's that i love also. They are not in the same league as the 910's, but for the money, very nice!
