Movies: the remake is good, but is the original better?

The thread about 'Let Me In' got me thinking about this. 'Let Me In' is a remake of 'Let the Right One In,' a Swedish film. - I loved the original and have yet to see the remake.

So what movies are out there where the original is better than the remake? Are there popular movies that we don't even know are remakes?

For example, Vanilla Sky (which I thoroughly enjoyed) was a remake of the '97 film, Abre Los Ojos. Both were great movies, but I enjoyed the original more!

    Psycho...

Actually would be a much shorter list the other way around. Other than War of the Worlds I'm hard pressed to think of a remake that came close... and I'm not that sure about WOTW...

The Day the Earth Stood Still... bad, bad remake.

And all the re-releases of the first Star Wars trilogy where George Lucas crapped CGI all over the originals.

and that fricken jerk won't release the original originals in blu ray, just the junked up CGI versions. Blegh. I watched them once and haven't seen them since.

Vanilla sky pales in comparison to the original Abre los ojos.

I just watched Inception, and today it occurred to me that it's basically a remake of Total Recall. I mean that scene at the end where Leo's wife tried to convince him that his reality was all a paranoid delusion... Sharon Stone tried to pull exactly the same thing with Arnold in TR!!! ****.

Anyway, I liked TR better.

    Really?

I think you're giving total recall way too much credit here

In general, remakes dont work, I think thats your question,,are they as good, Ive yet to see True Grit, However most remakes, are a slight twist on the original,, Brought up tp date,, added effects that sort of stuff, In my OP, Any movie that is regarded as great, or a classic in the first place should be left alone,, any movie that sucked in the first place, should also be left alone,,, This brings Hulk to mind,,, personly, i thought the first one was good,, after seeing the seconed, which, was basicaly a remake to revamp the whole idea,,

Let Me In is nearly the same film for American audiences that can't stand subtitles. Unfortunately, it was poorly marketed. The slasher audience was bored and once word of mouth was out, stayed home. It's a film lovers piece...and heck...I don't know how they sell those films to a mass market. It's not often they do well at the box office.

I'm interested in what Finscher is going to do with the Millenium trilogy. I just finished the last film, The Girl that Kicked the Hornet's Nest. It was an excellent story. Fincher might do an English version port, like Let Me In, but I'm hoping for something better...and that will be very hard to do. Noomi Rapace owns the Lisabeth Salander role and her replacement, Rooney Mara, has very big (little) boots to fill.

Just finished this recently myself and couldn't agree more about Noomi Rapace. Craig seems too macho/buff to be a good fit for Blomkvist also. But that's Hollywood for you.

Yeah, but he doesn't have to be. He's a good actor and while he was never in bad shape in his roles before Bond, he wasn't a specimen either. The guy who played Blomkvist did an outstanding job. I don't know how he's portrayed in the books other than he sleeps with multiple partners in each book, but, as seen, he's just a regular dude, a bit soft, laid back, charming and no one would call him particularly good looking. What did shine through was that women liked him and he liked them. We'll see...I think DC can do the job. I think Finscher can do the job...not sure about Mara...and if she can't, then watch for the backlash.

That's pretty much how he was in the books too. I just took a look at a couple of pics from the set, and Craig actually looks like a good fit for that role.

Two that come to mind are: DOA & Cape Fear. I like the originals better, by far.
