Replacing Boston Acoustics A60 speakers

Hi

I recently got rid of some old Boston Acoustics A60 speakers I liked
a lot. (I thought they were dead - but I now realize I could have repaired them for a few dollars!)
These had an 8" woofer, 1.5" tweeter and nominally covered 55 - 25 kHz (3dB) and were fairly efficient.

So, I need to get some replacements. What would people recommend for something that's at least as good? I looked a bit at things like monitor 40, tsi100, tsi200, and RTi4. But those all have much smaller woofers - is that going to limit the bass - or has technology made strides in getting good bass out of smaller speakers since 1990?!

Primary use would be for stereo listening - but at some point I need to get better speakers for a home theater setup as well.

Thanks very much.

The Monitor 40's can be had on Polk Direct's eBay page for a song, and will knock your socks off compared to what you've been used to listening to. They also make a great foundation for a surround sound setup in the future.

I've had the Bostons, and the 40's, and the 40's will play just as low, and do it with more articulation and speed.

    Cheers,
    Russ

    WELCOME TO CLUB POLK!

These Bostons look an awful lot like some KLH and Advent classics from the past and the brochure even touches on that. In fact the dimensions are almost exactly the size of the Cambridge Soundworks Model Six (redesign by Henry Kloss).

    8" woofer
1.75" tweeter with 5/8" integral dome
    90db efficiency
    50-20khz +/-3db
    15-150 watts
    8 ohms
    Acoustic Suspension two-way design
    16 lbs each...similar size box.
Crossover is lower to enhance voice reproduction at 2Khz instead of the Boston 3Khz?

The Polk M40s are also an excellent bookshelf but the sound will be different from a vintage acoustic suspension Kloss speaker. Not better or necessarily worse? Just 'different'.

Depends on your 'tastes'! Is your A60 a ported or sealed enclosure?

Well, I don't have them now (as I gave them away on Craigslist!) but I think they were sealed...

Yep. That sounds just like the Kloss speaker above. You might want to take a listen to those if you liked the Boston. They're also pretty cheap but currently out of stock at their site?

Everyone should have a pair of Model 6. It's the one 'right' thing CSW is still doing, if they are still doing it. Last I checked they were in the clearance bin @ hifi.com.

I think maybe I need to look into Infinity P163s. Sorry if it's not OK to mention other competitors here! I have a need for (musical, not rumbling) bass and the P163s appear to go a bit lower than M40s. I'm actually very tempted by the M70s (great bargain, and they look great!) but my room layout seems to require "boring" bookshelf speakers...
