Question about PCM 48 and no rears

Looking for a temporary fix, as Im in process of upgrading.... BUT....

Years ago I bought a Sony home 5.1 home theater system in a box. Its not new enough to decode TrueHD audio, but does do Dolby Digital and has a blue light at top when its in DD.

That being said, last week I upgraded my TV to a new Vizio 240hz LCD (VIZIO SV471XVT) and bluray player.

Since my Sony receiver doesnt have HDMI connections, I connected my receiver to my TV with optical audio cable, then everything else is connected to the tv with HDMI cables.

So, heres my question... When watching bluray movies and even watching my Directv satelite, it displays "PCM 48" on my receiver and I dont seem to have the rear surround speakers anymore... its stuck in 3.1 i guess (just fronts and sub)

I havent played around with the receiver, so I know i didnt mess any settings up... but whats going on? is this an easy fix? Only real difference now is the optical cable, before was using just regular red/white cables and I think DVD might have been using digital coaxal...

Im not sure what PCM 48 is, but Id like to get the best sound quality possible and definitly my rear surrounds back.

Okay, apparently PCM is better quality than the Dolby... so this is a good thing right? I guess I just want to have the rears working. Will running the cable from bluray directly to receiver fix the no rears but still run in PCM?
