Welborn Ultrapath Battery Operated Pre

Interested in building another 2CH rig, starting with this as my preamp.

Heard one a few years back, and in my experience it was the quietest, clearest, and most dynamic pre I've heard. Course I can't recall what tubes were in place but anyway...

This was available as a kit or pre-assembled. Whether its assembled, in pieces, working or not I want it.

I'd be curious to listen to other suggestions as well, maybe another battery operated preamp (no Bottleheads).

    I've owned one of these.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

    What'd you think of it?

I heard it on a fully modified Moscode tube-hybrid amp on stock Magnepan 1.6's and fully modded 2.3tl's and loved it.

How's it compare to the Cary AES pre on audiogon? One just caught my eye and it's only $250!

I'm no Cary fan and recall it being dead quiet, neutral and easy to forget dynamically since it doesn't have much character, even with tube changes. If it's 250, that's a steal but it can be a problem to get repaired if it comes down to it.

I owned the Welborne Ultrpath (purchased from Doro) and the Dodd Battery Preamp. The Dodd is more musical and dynamic. The Welborne had a tendency to sound dry in my opinion, robbing the music of its fullness and body. Don't get me wrong, the Welborne is better than a lot of pres, but the Dodd is in a completely different league.

I'd say the Dodd is better musically as well.
