Is it normal not to get any sound out of the 2803 until the volume hit around the -35db level? I have never owned a good receiver before and never had to turn the volume control up that high to get sound.

Thanks

Is it totally silent until that point? I have a 2803 and I can start to hear stereo at about -70 or so. For movies I start to hear sound at around -55 to -50. If you are not hearing anything until -35 I would say there is definately something wrong.

It's not normal, and I'd check my speaker wiring ... and any other connection points until the problem is resolved.

When is this happening? In ALL modes and sources? In ALL speakers? Is this happening when running your mains in direct mode, using your favorite FM radio station? Reds are going to reds and blacks are going to blacks? It isn't normal, so start the troubleshooting process.

    Two Channel Setup:

    Speakers: Wharfedale Opus 2-3
    Integrated Amp: Krell S-300i
    DAC: Arcam irDac
    Source: iMac
    Remote Control: iPad Mini

    3.2 Home Theater Setup:

    Fronts: Klipsch RP-160M
    Center: Klipsch RP-160M
    Subwoofer: SVS PB12NSD (X 2)
    AVR: Yamaha Aventage RX-A2030
    Blu Ray: Sony BDP-S790
    TV Source: DirecTV Genie

Thanks for the info. I checked again and the sound was faint but audible @ -65db for stereo and -55db for movies. I hooked it up so quick that I just sat back and expected to be blasted off my couch. When I stuck my ear next to the speaker I could hear sound at those levels. Thanks again for the replies!

It does not sound like you have gone through calibration as yet. This may be contributing to the low output.

Thanks everyone for their input. As far as calibration goes, 1. What do I need to do it (I was reading other threads and a SPL meter and a test disc seem s necessary) 2.Do I buy a digital or analog SPL meter, 3. What are the steps necessary to actually adjust each speaker?
I was trying to get all this info from other threads but couldn't quite put together all the pieces in a confident manner! I would greatly appreciate someone posting a comprehensive guide to calibration, maybe in a new thread, so it can be there for other newbies too! Thanks!

The procedure has been posted many times here. Below is the link to one of the best explanations by Dr. Spec about halfway down.

The Radio Shack analog SPL meter is the best value. The Avia and Sound & Vision test discs are the most popular here.
