Wall mounting the TV

I am going out this weekend to buy a wall mount and then going to be installing it on Sunday. Any tips/tricks on 1- buying the mount what to look for 2-installing the mount.

The wall on which it will be installed, is open on the other side, it's in the unfinished part of the basement (tv room is finished) so no issues about fishing cables and such. I will buy a sleeve for the hole I will cut out for cables.

Anything is greatly appreciated

Measure 5 times and drill only once. I hate re-drilling holes I mess up.
Use a tape measure on the backside of the wall and then use those measurements to hit the middle of the studs with holes for screws on the front of wall.

You may have to add some 2 x 4s and screw them to the existing studs in the back side of the wall to get the mount exactly where you want it....don't skimp on the bracing.

If metal studs, I would add wood 2x4 next to and place mount to that. Easy since you state open back wall.

Get a mount that allows for slight adjustments after being hung. When I finished my 47" mount a few weeks ago it was noticeably crooked even though the mount was 100% straight. I noticed that there was more "give" on one side of the mount for turning and tilting than the other so I had to use the back screws that allow to compensate for such madness. A pain in the **** but it got the job done.

The mount I wanted was $129.00 at BB. I ended up getting a similar model for $32.00 off Ebay shipping included. It was here (Baltimore) in 2 days from California. Shop around.

It came with (6) huge 4" wood screws. Since it's so long I was able to hit 3 studs with 2 screws each. I needed to use a hammer drill to drive them all the way in.

3 stud versions can be a little more forgiving about placement when trying to center the TV. And the thick screws are a challenge to drill into each stud. A standard drill often won't cut it. I ended up using a ratchet wrench.

So, it's done, and installed.... Not a big deal looks great I'll post pics in a bit. I ended up finding a mount which has a level built in the main bracket (nice touch). I paid 55$ for it. Now on to the frustrating part, the screws provided to attach the brackets to the tv were fine if I didn't need room to plug anything in,, went out to 3 different stores the longest I could find was 2", we were looking for 2.5", so I had to cut down the spacers with a hand saw. I ran all my cables through the cold air return, made a nice easy clean install. Tv was up, components all hooked up except for my PS3...I find that the end of the HDMI cable came loose and broke(wtf?) so now, I either have to remove everything and fish out the cable and fish another one in (plus buy another one) or buy a splitter, and run all HDMI to it and use the only working HDMI as the main to the TV..... I will see in the near future. I was just told that we have to replace both bearings on the rear of our xtrail plus the service it was in for so we are looking at 600$+, looks like I can't use the PS3 for a while until I figure out how I will connect it.

Thanks, tHat was my main concern. I've seen plenty of wall mounted tvs with cables dangling or showing that I needed to be sure it was done right. This also freed up lots of room as where my ps3 and dvdp are used to sit the centre speaker. I had too much gear in the cabinet. Now they can breath better. My next project is to make some longer legs for the shelf in the cabinet so the rotel has more room above, although it runs pretty cool. I really like the look of the mounted tv I just wish it was 50" not 42". Oh well some other day.
