No matter your politics, your religion....the army in Egypt is apparently, according starting to shoot protesters in "Liberation Square"....the center of Cairo.

My heart truly goes out to these people. I found a live stream on Al Jazeera and it's amazing, just unbelievable what these people are trying to do, and the siege they are now facing.

I know I have probably alienated some folks here with my strong opinions in the past, but I just feel the need to mention this now.

They are out in numbers, teenagers, kids, and families, and heavy gunfire is erupting now.....so sad given the resolve of this, overall, non-violent protest.....an "American" principle if there ever was one.

I've been watching this stuff unfold non-stop. The doctor is right. Regime change ain't easy and what starts peacefully almost ALWAYS ends in outlining the POWER of the state. We don't normally see STATES, and usually encounter them only when their monopoly on coercive force rears its head. It seems here, that the Mubarak Gov't is reprising a strategy used in Iran a while back. And that's unfortunate.

Yeah Cooper took some hits and so did a few others as well as the Egyptian people themselves. First Tunisia, now Egypt, who's next. It's like the Domino Effect for Islamic countries.

Of course, protests can be found throughout human history. The U.S. has no monopoly on that, but I understand what you mean.

Mubarak supporters = plainclothes cops = Goon Squads

I have yet to see an "orderly transition" from a dictatorship to a democracy without any blood.

These are, IMO, epic events that will have far, far, far reaching effects and consequences especially if successful.

The fallout from Kent State pales, IMO, with the fallout that will occur from the events in Eqypt.

Really all we can do is hope that the outcome of all this ends up on the positive side of the number line.

Yeah, I've been watching this unfold non-stop too, and the Al Jazeera coverage on their live internet stream has been very good.

But watching it from their camera's vantage point with commentary is a bit surreal as well.

Let's hope they end up with a parliamentary style democracy with a constitution similar to Turkey's.

why are they looking for help from the United States? Does any country ever ask for help for any other country? Why not ask Canada or Ireland or some other country>?

why when ever unrest happens in any part of the world... world leaders ask for help from the USofA. Egypt is a country of 79 million people.. no small place..

If the shoe was on the other foot.. would be we asking for help from Egypt? No.

I too have been following this with great interest from a historical perspective. It is a human tragedy to be sure, but the group mainly behind the unrest is using these people to achieve something they have been after for a millenia. There is significant unrest in several countries in the region, including the Sudan, Jordan, Yemen, and more than a few others. The rebirth of the Ottoman Empire is at hand, and a Muslim Caliphate will rule all of North Africa and Southern Europe...basically the entire Mediteranian, including Israel, who's elimination has been a stated goal of the Muslim Brotherhood.

There are ties between the groups formenting the unrest and Iran, which stands to gain a new partner in it's pledge to wipe Israel from the face of the earth.

How this affects the US is unclear, save for much higher fuel prices on the horizon should the flow of oil through the Suez Canal be interupted.

Do your homework people as I fear this is not the time to think that this is just a problem for the middle east to deal with.

    U.S. Negotiating Mubarak's Severance PackageFebruary 2, 2011
CAIRO—In an effort to provide monetary compensation to the Egyptian president for three decades of faithful service, U.S. officials opened negotiations with Hosni Mubarak Tuesday, offering him a severance package worth $20 million upon termination of his employment. "We are all thankful for the hard work and long hours President Mubarak put in over the years, and hope our discussions continue smoothly," said senior U.S. negotiator Frank Wisner, who admitted that the final settlement would have to be considerable, as Mubarak's contract with the U.S. was being terminated 15 years early. "Unfortunately, he no longer reflects our needs in the region at this time, but we would like to end our relationship on the right foot. He deserves to retire in comfort." Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has also reportedly offered to write Mubarak a letter of recommendation in case he wishes to apply for any dictatorship jobs with U.S. allies in the future.

you know what the sad thing is, after all the bloodshed from the people wanting regime change, they will get a far more oppressive regime because of it.

Ladies, better break out the burkas from the back of the closet and dust em off, your gonna need it. (I don't mean the fashionable head scarf, I mean the full burlap body sack) Have fun showing off those eyes.

Ladies, going to school and getting an education? yeah, might not want to put too much stock in that in the future.

Anyone in Egypt that isnt well versed in the Koran/Sharia law might wanna get there read on during this "transition period"

The Egyptian people are being played like a Stradivarius on this, ever wonder why alot of the signs are in English? I have little faith in the Egyptian people that they can pull off a true democracy from this. The Muslin Brotherhood will fill the power vacuum, and the Egyptions will follow like sheep.

no one will be more happy if I am wrong on this than me, believe that. I have a feeling I am not though.

What a crock of BS I dont where you get your facts from BUT

Since the start of Canadian military activities in Afghanistan, 154 Canadian soldiers have lost their lives. A Canadian diplomat, two Canadian aid workers and a Canadian journalist have also been killed over the course of the insurgency.

US Military Deaths - Afghanistan 1,472 I fail to see how 1,472 is as many as 154...please explain how its the same
