Sony Receiver & R.S. SPL Meter question...

I've finally gotten around to fine tweaking my H/T do to the fact that the SVS PB2-Plus will soon be here. The question I have is this, using the Radio Shack SPL meter and setting up all my speakers per Dr. Specs recommendations this is the problem I'm running into. I know you set all your speaker volumes to "0" and the sub to "-5". I'm calibrating to 75db using the test tones on the receiver. When I go into the menu to set the volumes on the speakers this is how it's working, I have volume controls for only the following speakers, Center, Right Surr., Right Rear, Left Rear and Left Surr. I DO NOT have any volume control for the Front Left and Front Right. So does that mean I have to first run the test tones on the front right and left and then adjust the remaining speakers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx.

Unless this is a 7.1 AVR, then the right and left surround would be your front left and front right, I'm thinking.
Anything else would be highly non-conventional in a DD/DTS AVR, much less a Sony ES.
Did you try it yet and see what happens when you activate the test tones for the surround R/L?
Edit: I see you are indeed running a 7.1 system. Wow, that's really wierd. I guess you will have to set the master volume until the mains come up 75 dB each, and then go off that baseline for the other speaks.

You are able to adjust the volume of the L&R, BUT it will not display in +/- DB format like the other speakers.
Just use your volume knob when in "Fix" mode on the test tone menu. You can increase or decrease the volume as you see fit. Actually you can use the volume knob in either menu, but "Fix" sets the tone at the speaker of your choice and doesn't rotate.
I would set this level first using your microphone or meter, then continue on "normally" for the other speakers.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
That's how my Outlaw 1050 operates...Turn up the volume on the AVR until the meter reads 75 db, then balance the front left and right until they both read 75 db, then adjust the rest of the channels accordingly...
It's not that dificult, the AVR is just using the mains as a refence point. So the volume you calibrate at would be your reference level for the 75 db test tones generated from the AVR...
My volume ranges from 0 to 80 on the Outlaw, I turn it up to 58 to get a 75 db reading using the VE disc, then I calibrate the center and surrounds at that same volume level...So my center ends up at -2 db and I can't remember what my surrounds are set at, but you sould get a good idea of what I talking about...
Hope this helps...
