vinyl rips, vs redbook Cds

Alright, I know what I'm in for here... So let me explain! No, that'll take too long... let me sum up...

I've been listening to a vinyl rip of a Gordon Giltrap album for quite a while (Fear of the Dark). I decided I liked it, and ordered the CD from his official supplier.... It just arrived today.

My first impressions are that the CD is cleaner, of course. No pops, clicks, or static... duh. But, on the most impresive tracks... the CD is lacking depth, even over the "crappy" vinyl rip. I don't hear the same bass riffs... things are just totally lost.

Is this a result of poor remastering, or is my setup just more "in tune" to LP responses? Or am I just way too drunk to attempt to analyze this stuff?
Ludicrous gibs!

My vinyl rips sound totally different than my red book cd's. Not better, not worse. I think certain frequencies are exaggerated while others are oppressed when it comes to the vinyl rips. The other day I ripped Deathcab for cutie's album Plans from vinyl. I was laughing at myself because the original was most likely recorded digitally....it was pressed on vinyl and then I converted it back to digital for listening pleasure. Sounded great!

I totally prefer vinyl rips over redbook cd's. They seem more "alive". Less compressed. I find I even prefer music from my media server over most cd's but that has more to do with the dac's than anything else. I still love cd's for convenience over vinyl but the music server beats them both in that category as well. For pure music pleasure vinyl still trumps them all in my book.

Why yes... yes it was :)

Thanks for the affirmation, guys. I just feel that the CD wasn't mastered to bring out certain frequencies that the LP rip does. I guess it's just a case of being used to what I was hearing. The CD isn't bad, just sounds different.

I got ripping vinyl down to an art.

I rarely buy CDs, 'cept for SACD or redbook MoFi. Few and far between. Decent commercial redbooks are a crap shoot.

I can attest to this statement! Mike ripped me a collection of music, that quite frankly a couple of the cd's left me shocked. I would never have guessed he had taken them from vinyl. The rest had minor snaps & what have you but not enough to make me pull my hair out.

If you want good rips to cds, you have to take excellent care of your records.

    Thanks Mike!
