Can someone help me? I'm in the process of hooking up my new 7600 with my new 898 recvr. I've properly hooked up all the +/- spkr terminals to the correct rcvr +/- spkr terminals, BUT . . .
when I turn on the rcvr and pick a known (strong) FM or AM station, I have to crank the volume up to 45 (from a scale of 1 to 99) to hear the stations - this seems way to hight a setting to hear a radio broadcast. I have not yet gotten to the point where I can test the DVD player.

Also, the on screen setup display (OSD) doesn't display on my TV screen (I've tried the TV's input 1, 2, and 3 selections w/no success). Here's the setup: I have my DVD and its component video cables and digital co-ax cable routed to the rcvr's input#1 for component video/digital co-ax, then I have my x-box game console's component video cables and optic co-ax cables to the rcvr's input#2 component video cables and digital co-ax inputs. Then I have the OUTPUT component video cables routed to the TV. So, I should be getting the on screen display on my TV.

Maybe the sound volume issue is related to the completing the entire harware setup process via the OSD?

i have the onkyo 777 and there is a switch on the back for your osd it switches between s vid and composite. i have not looked at the one you have but maybe it has a switch. also on some tv's they will only except one kind of feed, as on mine i have a sony wega xbr and i have s vid coming into it from the receiver, but when i had my vcr hooked into the receiver with composite i could not get a picture, so i bought a composite to s vid adapter.
maybe this will help. i have my volume on a neg scale and watch my movies between -15 to 0 depending on the soundtrack, and cd's around -20 to -12, both are connected with the opti cable.

    Hi ncstatesman,
I am having a Denon 3801, i will get osd only in composite and S-Video, may be ur onkyo is of the same type, try connecting ur tv through the S-Video or Composite and see if that one helps.
I know it is hard to switch to some other inputs when u are watching the DVd, but thats how it works for me :-)

Guys, Thank you for the help, I'll try all these things out when I get home tonight. I was working on this 'till midnight and had to make myself stop - was getting aggravated and had to get some sleep!

Someone in an onkyo thread e-mailed me about the issue I"m having with the Onkyo/speaker/system setup . . . here's what he had to say:

"Onkyo seems to have used an exponential volume representation. For example, an increase from 20 to 30 isn't as loud as an increase from 50 to 60. When watching DVDs I have the volume set anywhere from 55 to 68. Other users have commented on the same thing as you in other threads. It appears to be the way Onkyo chose to display it. The OSD is only output through the composite and S-video outputs. If you
only used component, you won't see a thing. I think this is done to keep costs down. If they output it through component, they would have had to use some sort of component encoder. I would suggest hooking a composite or S-video cable from the 898 to your monitor while you initially setup your system. "

    Thanks for your suggestions!
