I currently have a 5.1 set up. My room is 12x24. I have a pair of monitor
40 to add and i`m not sure the best connection would be. My choice's
are , front high, front wide or surround back. Or i could leave as 5.1 set up. Another choice is to place m40 speakers on floor next to main listening couch.
I thank you for any positive input ..

    Why another thread? http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=113913

EDIT: Oh, I see, your room got 4' longer! My recommendation is still the same, though.

I would try all 3 options and see what sounds best. Some people feel that Front Height is better than Front Wide though especially with your narrow room...compared to length. If I recall correctly your couch may be in the way of placing your surrounds directly behind it,but try off to the side and see what you think ( will they be in the way and do they sound ok ).

Thanks larry777 for your comments. I think my 1st choice will be along side of my couch, then i'll try moving the couch forward a bit. I was thinking of placing my m40 just behind couch facing upward. Not sure is that will work. I guess when you stated try all 3 options ,thats what i`ll probably end up doing. This leads me to another question. When adding surround rears, Does my AVR split the same signal 4 ways or is it different channel?

I understand it to be Different Channels. All 7 channels will be in play when using a 7.1 setup, if your source plays data that was recorded for 7.1 output.

You started two threads with essentially the same purpose. I thought I had given you solid advice the first time.

Back channels are better behind and slightly above you. Due to real-world room variances, the conditions for ideal placement are rarely ideal, so most people are forced to make compromises. You are free to place them anywhere. If you like how it sounds, leave it there. My recommendation still stands. Most here will agree that a properly configured 5.1 will be more satisfying than a poorly implemented 7.1.

With a true 7.1 source, the back channels are separate. With a 5.1 source, the backs are matrixed or nonexistent, depending on how your AVR is setup.

I didn't see any sarcasm, I did notice some attention to detail:biggrin:

Over 50, have you tried your "wide setting"? I've got my surrounds behind my head and my wides up high and wide, the sound stage is pretty full. I've experimented with my rears, highs and wides. The final out come was surrounds in the "rear" position and my wides up high and wide.

My main listening is against A WALL ,so i have very little options for placement. I packed my M40 away, i really like these speakers. I might try adding them to front wide placement . Has anyone done this . Any thoughts?

What about placing them on the side walls facing the listening Spot.

I have heard bad things about front wide placement. Never tried it myself though.

Give it a shot and let us know.

If you look at the post directly before yours, I hope you'll see the entire focus was on "wide" placement

My seating (actually lying) is right against the wall as you mention yours is. My "surrounds" are on the wall my headboard is on, up high, wide and angled down to the listener, or pillows in this case.

My surrounds actually take on a surround/rear surround personality and my front "wides" fill in to a complete front sound stage.

    Good luck with yours.............
