Since both my avr and br player offer bass management it seems to me only 1 of them should actually do the job? In other words, one should be set to all speakers small to get bm having lfe sent to the sub and the other should be all large to not duplicate the effort?

I'm thinking my Oppo bd-93 may have better dac than my older Yammy rx-v1400 so do the mgt in the Oppo?

I am assuming that you have the analog outputs of Oppo connected to the 5.1 analog inputs of your Yamaha. The best thing to do is experiment with the speaker settings in the Oppo, and your AVR and see what sounds better to you. See page 17 of your owners guide for your receiver. I think bass management only works from the Oppo to your receiver if you have an analog connection.

Yes, I'm running analog 5.1 only...using multi-channel on the avr for all music. Am I thinking about this correctly in saying if the avr is all speakers large that there is no bass management in the avr? Also, if I specify actual speaker distance in the Oppo I probably should then be sure all distances are equal in the avr?
The more I think about this stuff the more I need an enhanced beverage!

With analog only the distance and 80hz crossover setting in the Oppo apply. The speaker setup on your AVR only applies to digital sources. So you needn't worry about it.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO

Great, thanks. Simplifies things...balanced system last night with a disc and analog sound meter...made my settings and played Yes "Fragile" DVD-A...sounded great! I think this weekend we'll watch Clapton's "Crossroads"...yum!
