Help with making looping generator sound

I'm looking for an inexpensive way to make a looping sound of an old style gas powered generator. First, I need the audio file and I'm not sure where to get that. iTunes, no luck.

Once I have the file I'd like to find a way to make it looping so it doesn't stop until I turn it off. This is for inside the generator shack in my backyard.

Any ideas on where I can get the sound and how I can make this work?

Not sure what you're trying to do but if you're trying to build a noise cancellation system then you should record that exact generator's sound because that will work best. You'll need a high quality microphone and recording system and you're playback loop will have to be out of phase so you can can get the harmonic cancellation your looking for.

If you just want generator noise, why? Just start the generator.

The generator is a facade, it's not real. I want the sound of a generator running to put inside the shack the generator is in to make it sound as if it is running.

I want to put it inside this...

Just get the sound of a Ferrari F1 car or a Chevy or a Ford big block idling away and loop that through. Then when people ask, just tell them you got one of those "Precision Engines" to run you're pump so you could be "different" (like you aren't "different" already).

Why do model railroaders use fake sounds in their fake worlds?

Personally, I'd look at getting the old generator running again :). When you want the sound, start the generator...

You could always pull it from Youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILLl93piNKo

Oh, that's awesome. I'm looking for something like that, just not as modern sounding, something a little more antique'ish. If any of you have been on an Indiana Jones Ride at the Disneyland parks, you'd know exactly what am looking for.

F'n YouTube. I actually found the Indiana Jones generator sound from the ride. Now, how do I get this burned onto a CD? Anyone?

A loop from line out to line in(1/8" to 1/8" mini cable) on the sound card and use windows sound recorder. Have you thought of using a Harley sound bite?
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. I know there is a tool to grab the video with sound, and then you should be able to take the sound out of the video. Google is your friend on this one.

I know that ours is not to question why...

Are you going with a mono setup on this? Perhaps one of those outdoor speakers that looks like a rock? Actually, if you're putting it under the roof, you might not even need an outdoor speaker. This is reminding me of something you'd see at a theme park.

I think you should add a small smoke machine too.

BINGO! You should also make sure the smoke gives off an authentic aroma. Diesel?

There ya go. A little Kerosene, drain oil, a big whick and it will smell like an old generator plus it will keep the skeeters away:wink:

I used to just go Line Out --> mini to RCA cable --> Cassette deck.

Then record it back onto a computer using Soundtrack Pro (looping is available in that software).

What? You mean there's no way to just some how copy the file to iTunes and then burn it from there?

    I use http://www.listentoyoutube.com/

Just paste the video URL in the box, and it'll rip the sound out.

If you want a true loop, though... it needs to be cut so that the repeat is seamless. The file can't end at a different pitch than it starts.

They may be calling it a generator but that's more than likely an old air compressor.

The diesel shop I worked at had two massive air compressors that were about 50 years old and they sounded exactly like that. Probably why you had such difficulty finding the right sound you were looking for.

The whining sound come across as a scroll-type air compressor, but there's a few firings of a hit-n-miss thrown in the background. I agree... if that was a recording of a generator, it would have to be one with some bad bearings or something.

Personally, I'd prefer the sound of a big old hit-n-miss in that shack - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVfDJpWjzo8

Yeah, it's a huge engine, but it's got a nice steady firing rate.

Or maybe something a bit bigger :)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbIBjQILTac&feature=related

There's a couple good links there. But there's just something about the Disneyland sound that I like. Thanks for that link bro, I'll give it a shot.

The generator in the Indiana Jones ride made it seem like it powered all the lighting through the line, thus the hit-n-miss made all the lights flicker and dim.

Got to love Hollywood... hit-n-miss engines used as light plants almost always utilised a battery to normalize voltages. The lights ran off the battery, and the engine kept the battery charged. They also were almost always DC generators, so your bulbs were actually rated for 24 or 36v DC. This is because they were used in rural farms where utilities weren't available at all. They were the ONLY source of power, not just backup sources.
