Question on Blu Ray

A friend of mine was looking for a Blu Ray player and asked me a few questions. During this conversation, he said he may just buy one from Best Buy, I told him not to buy one of their HDMI cables, that there are other sources much cheaper. To that, he said that he already has a HDMI cable on the DVD player that he's replacing. Well, I told him that I believe he already has a Blu Ray player. I have not seen the one he's got and I don't know the model number, but am I correct in thinking that ONLY a Blu Ray will have HDMI output? If a player is not 1080P, there wouldn't be any need for HDMI, right

Unless you're getting 3D or need something else in the HDMI 1.4 spec like an audio return channel, you should be fine with HDMI cables made in the past few years. I'd definitely try it before wasting good money on a new one. HDMI is pretty old technology at this point as others said. And unless you're running long cables like for an in-wall set-up, cheap cables will usually do fine.

As long as the HDMI cable is version 1.3a or higher, it should be all right (I guess, 1.4 for 3D support)... Monoprice cables will do the trick.Panasonic PT-AE4000U projector for movies

That's what I found out last year.
I also bought mine from Monoprice too.
Now the world cable makers are uniting. If it says High speed, it's supposed to be at least 1.3.
I.4 has more capability,Internet and such,= more cost. Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them. -
Don't laugh. but I picked up 6' HDMI cables (RCA) from Menards for around $10 and they work just fine for me. Otherwise, Monoprice or even Tigerdirect is your best bet.
