First look: Flume style waterfall

The footings are in and all the rough framing is done. A bit shorter then I originally planned though. It runs about 25' and then dumps into a small, 40 gallon pond.

I need to let the wood dry for about a week and then I'll stain it to match everything else in the yard. Then, I'll run some plastic rain gutter from about 3' in and that is where the water will flow from.

Hopefully by next week it will be 100% up and running. This pic will give you a general overview of the project.

Any koi going in that pond?

No fish, no life what-so-ever. I just want the sound of water in the yard and doing it this way matches the theme of the yard vs a rock style waterfall.

:smile:Looks cool big guy, let us see it with some h20 running. Still think ya need a bigger boat....for the height and splash factor. Only one way to find out...let 'er rip.

Very nice looking project ! One question: is that a yardarm with a noose hanging in the left of the picture (for unruly guests ?).

    Very cool, good work.

Looks like it will be a nice waterfall.

Do you need any water? I can send as much down as you need, just need to melt it!
(we have received about 15 inches more since this picture was taken 2 weeks ago)

I've decided not to go all out waterfall with this, I want to get a smaller pump that will give me only a couple gallons per minute keeping the water flow at a minimum. This way there will be very little splash. If it does splash too much I can change the layout to lesson it. This height is just for starters.

I'm hoping to stain it all Monday and in the meantime get the pump and parts so it's ready to install. I am stoked as this back part of my yard was totally plain compared to the rest so this Flume ties the entire yard together so completes the look.

No, not sure what I'd call it, just a raised deck with decor. I had to remove two very large Queen Palms that were tagging the power lines and sparking. Instead of spending tons of coin to pull the stumps out I built this over them.

It's an older pic, but it shows the entire deck.

I envy you. Everything is brown around here. I love your water trough idea. You could probably modify the splash/sound with a section of chain hanging at the end.

I have a pond about 500 feet from my garden. I have been wanting to run a line to pump from it into a tank for watering, but now see I could add some interesting water features. Thanks for the inspiration!

I thought about doing that, your chain idea. If it's too high and too loud and I can hang something from the end a few feet down so the water has something to run down before falling into the pond.

My neighbor just gave me a $10.00 off a $50.00 purchase at Lowe's and it expires today. I'm going to use it and get my pump and supplies today.

Now every time you sit in your back yard you'll have the urge to pee. Running water is overrated. ;)

Looks cool Ron. All your backyard projects always come out looking great, I imagine this will be no different.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Well, the Flume is all stained at the end where the water will be flowing. The pump is assembled (came with it's own flow adjuster which is cool) and the pond is cleaned out. Hopefully in the next hour or so I'll have water flowing. Pics to come shortly, that is, if it all goes well.

Not sure where my pic went in the first post, oh well.

Anyway, as an update, the waterfall works awesomely, puts out just the right amount of water. The problem, it's too high and too loud. So my fix will be to lengthen the last bit of Flume and steepen it up, a lot, so the water has more Flume to run down and less of a drop. The drop will go from 5' down to about 2.5'. This should also lessen the splatter.

Here's a few pics of the near finished project. I plan to add a down spout to the very top where the water flows out to less the splatter and also add some rock decor around the pond. Should be fully complete within the next few days.

Oh, one more thing, anyone know where to get Amber color water dye. I want to tint the water a dirty color so it stands out a bit more.

I drink a lot of green tea thats got an amber(ish) color to it. Might be an option if you can get some loose leaf types.

Love your pictures. You must be in the only part of the country that's not covered in snow or ice.

I had a nice back yard, not as nice as yours though, when I lived in Hawaii Kai. A stones throw from Sandy Beach.... Memories...

Some up dated pics as of today. It's nearly complete now other than adding some more decor around the pond and a second coat of stain.
