I just mentioned the front of the speakers because that is how Cardas tells you to measure it.

Duh! I posted before reading your post. That makes sense since that is where the speakers are.

But, some speakers have rear ports, so I was curious what referance people are using.

I was reading a review of the Wilson Sophia that had the speakers 53" from the wall in a 12' x 19' room. That's over 4 feet from the wall measured from the back, which for me is to far into the room.

Wilson speakers, from what I understand, are impossible to place in a normal room
    - Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.

With my H/T speakers they are of the small variety and the rears are on brackets that make them about 2in off the wall. My fronts and center are on the t.v. table and are 2feet from the wall.
Now w/ my 2 InfinitySM112s they're ported so I keep them about a foot off my side walls facing in.

What works best varies by speaker a great deal. My Rega's can go fairly
close. They are front ported and suggest being placed fairly close to a wall.
The Hales' need plenty of space all the way around. Other than reviews
and experience, there's not much other to go on. Move them until they sound good. Normally more clearance is the rule of the day, but like the Rega's
    there are exceptions.
