Seems like Toyota has recalled another 1.7 million vehicles for fuel system problems/leaks.

Since November 2009, Toyota has recalled roughly 16 million vehicles world wide. That's like the entire U.S. sales figures for Toyota for the past 12 years. Makes you wonder what the hell happened? Where did it go wrong? Their stock has dropped 1.5% in the U.S. and still trending downwards last I looked and they've dropped over 2% in Japan when the market closed earlier today. It's expected to open down even further tomorrow and still drop as the news reaches around the globe and the ripple effects are realized.
Anyway, Ford's recalling or at least getting ready to recall about 288,000 2010 Fusions and it's siblings for fractured wheels studs. Kinda dwarfs in comparison to Toyota but it's still significant. Those fractured wheel studs could lead to wheels leaving the vehicles at inopportune times. There have been no reported accidents so far, just complaints but it seems the NHTSA is already investigating and Ford is moving fast. Then again, an NHTSA investigation isn't as potent as it was before the Toyota scandal last year and now they investigate pretty much all possible safety recalls.

There's a few other recalls out but in comparison, they are piddly and not worth mentioning. They aren't safety issues either so they didn't hit front page news either.
In happier news! The NAIAS seems to have netted the Detroit area about $375 million in revenue in to the local economy. That's a $25-$50 million jump from last year and attendance was at a record high. That's some good news.

Also, Ford seems to be building and selling so many F-150's that they ran out of parts to put them together. So they shut down production at the plant until the suppliers can catch up. That's a good sign.

It's good sign because truck sales, especially fleet sales, mean that work is being done and there is enough work and cash flow generated that new and/or replacement equipment can be purchased. It's a sign that things are getting better because more truck sales can mean more work is happening. That means more people are working again and possibly even more people are needed. It also shows that there is a level of consumer confidence returning. Even though housing prices slumped again last quarter, news like this shows consumers are loosening the clutches on the pocketbook and confidence is rising.
If it was SUV's that Ford couldn't put together fast enough, I'd be concerned.
And hey, even if it is false hope, at least we know there will be a ton of Ford and Toyota mechanics with PILES of work to do for a long time coming!

What's up with the recalls? Is it OUTSOURCING?? That seems to be a big problem here, the inability to control the supply chain and quality parts within it?
It's Fordism gone wild (assembly line/standard parts/whole, etc.). What do you do when parts are made in BATCHES for short periods in various parts of the world, including some in the U.S. Who INSPECTS all that? Who checks the STANDARDS? Just saying?
On that note. YEARS ago, JBL (for example) used to make a big to-do over how they engineered and made everything they put into their products from drivers to cabinetry--from conception to finished piece? That's no longer the case, I'm sure. But it's interesting!

All these recalls, and yet...

Although looks like GM's sales are improving, in China. -
Nice to know we bailed them out with our money, shafted the stock and bond holders, so they can open plants in China and Mexico. Then to add insult to injury, they hold an IPO asking us to invest again in the same company that shafted us. I would never buy another GM product on principle alone.HT SYSTEM-
