I saw some monitor 7s near me on craigslist for 75$. Is that a good price? No pics so I have to see in person. Claims good shape
Also is there a big difference between any of the different monitor 7 versions?

Assuming that they are in decent condition $75 is a good price. Monitor 7A with the Peerless tweeter are the most sought after. These have a black face with the leads on the surface in a 'V' shape (usually inverted). Monitor 10B has the SL-1000 (bright brushed metal face, labeled Polk Audio) or SL-2000 (black face, labeled 'Silver Coil Dome'). One wag said that these tweeters age like milk, not like wine. They can be replaced with the RDO-194 from Polk for $50 each. Tell Polk CS that you are a Club Polk member for that discount price.

Matt Polk himself thought that they were the best of the vintage Monitor line. Go for them if they are in good condition.

Yup. Those are the really bad ones alright. Better send them to me now, save a little face.

You done good son, now kick back, listen to those great speakers and don't give a damn which model you don't have.

haha. I agree completely. That's a great set of speakers. You'd be hard pressed to find a better pair a speakers for that price.

    Enjoy.

btw, I'm a believer that vintage polks are the best bang for the buck of any speaker ever, and the deal you got is above average within the vintage polk realm, so...... you did great!

just spit a little 'Buca Black on my keyboard with that one.

could easily be the best 75.00 you spend on audio hands down. I need speakers like I need a hole in my head and I probably would have snagged em just because.

I fell in love with the old monitor line years ago and they still just seem to have the "right" sound. I don't know if I just have bad ears, but I like the sl2000 tweeter that you have there also. I have two pair of 10b, some fives and 5jr and love them all. People say the 7 is the best sounding one, though, and I have never even heard them. Maybe one day...

Fantalastic buy! Unless you find some in the dumpster or Goodwill that's about half of the lowest price I've seen. I replaced the 2000 tweeters in mine with RDOs from Polk $48 each after discount. Save your money and listen to what you've got for a while. They may grow on you......and listen with your own ears.

I have been enjoying them so far. The most impressive part for me was the reproduction of upright bass's in some music, seemed so clean and defined. The best part is that my roommates cant understand how something old can sound better than a lot of the new stuff, we had some random pioneers as the mains, some G300B-K things and they couldn't believe the improvement.

But for me I am very happy with the purchase.

Congrats, Drevlin. My 7A's get lots of listening time in my home office. I don't think I will ever let them go. If you are handy with a soldering iron, rebuilding the crossovers is a popular improvement. You will find lots of help to do it here at CP. Meanwhile, enjoy.

This is the schematic, and you can keep your tweeters or upgrade to RDO194:

    http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18773&d=1155784674

If you upgrade the crossover, though, you can use this schematic and then upgrade the tweeters to RDO198:
