I have an Audio Alchemy DDE v1.1 that came in a set of AA gear I picked up a while back including the DLC preamp and anti-jitter unit. Unfortunately I only have 2 PS3's so I've never been able to run all 3 at once. haha. I would like to find out how to source a power supply that could work (like the channel islands VAC-1 or similar) but that may be a discussion for another day. Anyways, I really like the little pre, and I like the sound of the the DDE DAC, but I also don't know what I'm missing. So, much to my wallet's chagrin, I'm asking you all, what am I missing? Furthermore, how much would I have to spend to get something significantly better sounding? The only thing I really know is that it utilizes Analog Device's AD1865 chip and I use the I^2S input.

Any comments, advice, or insight welcome.

As always, thanks in advance!

nevermind. I've decided to give back. I'm going to be putting this DAC up for karma. Stay tuned.

AA made some high value digital products back in the day.The DDE1.1 was decent and with some well thought out mods could be improved upon.(AD made some great D-A chips but for some reason did'nt get the same market penetration as Burr Brown)However if your wanting to get into hirez down loads you'll need a modern unit with 24 bit 96k/192k capabilities. Products like the Cambridge Dac Magic and Musical Fidelities V-DAC would be modern equivelants that IMO should offer improvements over the DDE1.1.

i had thought that might be the case, thanks! I've been using it on a smaller rig and since I've been using my macbook pro almost exclusively in that setup for the last few months, it seemed like i might be due for an upgrade. I do like how it sounds with my Pio Elite CD player when used as a transport, though.

Between the two, does one have the upper hand in any regard?

Why not try some of the more common low cost, moderate options from Cambridge, Musical Fidelity, Music Hall, AMC, Scott Nixon....they're all kinds of new things to experience.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
