Hey polkies......I really need your help. I am noob when it comes to tubes. I'm just getting into tubes and rollin 'em. I've been reading a lot about tubes types and possible fakes etc. I was looking at some telefunken tubes (Ecc189) but am kinda scared to pull the trigga!

Could you guys look at these tubes and tell me if they are legit and if so what your thought are on the sonic quality of this tube

Thanks

Best 6sn7 varient I have tried in my Wright preamp and I have tried some great NOS 6sn7s.

Next upgrade will be to put 6 6sn7s in my wright amp. I already have a quad of KT88s in the same amp and the improvement is not minor.

I really like how much cooler the treasures are, the 6sn7s I can actually touch. The KT88s are hot but not as much as the vintage Tung Sol 6550 3 holes.

Check for the diamond and even then they only seem to fake the high dollar popular tubes. Never heard of an ECC189, what does that fit and what's the "American" equivalent?

His ad states what it subs, but I'd certainly do A LOT of homework as I've never seen that tube designation before.

that was my concern as well, they're supposed to be drop in subs for 6922's but I have not seen that designation either (ecc189)

Thank H9..............looked into it a little further and I believe that this tube was more or less made for VHF applications. The mechanics (pins) will fit 6922 placements but may not be an audio based tube if that makes any sense.

also found this in another forum:

"First of all ECC89 and ECC189 are not one and the same type.

Secondly, neither one is suitable for audio at least not domestic applications.

These are variable mu tubes used for automatic gain control (AGC), studio gear uses them sometimes in compressor/expander circuits."

    Hope this helps others

More detailed info on that tube:

    from another forum:
The ECC189 valve is no drop-in replacement for ECC88 or family (different characteristics, has variable mu for ALC in tuner input stages, interelectrode capacities different, optimised for cascode operation, higher noise figure at 200 MHz, was designed for VHF tuner intputs in TV sets as PCC/ECC189, used briefly in the early 1960s in Europe, quickly superseded by PC/EC900 neutralised circuits and transistors for cost reasons...). It will not destroy your amplifier, though, and certainly will sound different to ECC88 family - more odd order harmonics will be produced at high excitation levels (line stage). May work at low levels or with high degenerative feedback (cathode follower) - though there is no problem with trying if you have some...
The valve is still available as NOS in quantities and for very little money - I can understand that this may be tempting for DIY or valve kit manufacturers - though I would only use it in FM tuner input stages...
