Oh man. I thought he figured out the secret to eternal life. I bet at 96 he was in better shape than most people at any age.

I went to college in Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo CA, and he lived not far from there. Every Thursday we had a free hour from 11-12, and sometimes guest speakers were invited. One time in 1985 he was the speaker, so he must have been around 70 then. He had so much energy, he was just bouncing all around the stage during his talk. I will never forget his point that exercise is not good if you do not also enjoy life. He made the analogy that exercise was like putting your health in the bank, and when you went drinking, for example, you made withdrawals. As long as you were putting more into the bank than withdrawing you were okay.

    RIP.

Wasn't it Dave Barry who wrote a book called Stay Fit and Healthy Til You're Dead?

In seriousness, though, Jack LaLanne walked the walk. Seems to have done well practicing what he preached.

Great analogy. Im trying to eat healthier lately...lost a few pounds as well. Here's my gallon bag of grilled chicken for the week.

I never knew Jack swam from Alcatraz to Fisheman's warf. Eff swimming in water that cold!

Oh, and he was 60 years old.

    And handcuffed.

    And shackled.

    And towing a boat...

Not to worry, pattern your life after George Burns, smoke a good cigar and down a good scotch every now and then.

I guess more so it has to do with genetics. I had a relative in Atlanta, did everything wrong, smoked until he was 70, drank hard booze like he had a death wish, ate all the wrong foods, yet the old boy lived to 94. Who knows, when it's your time to check out doesn't matter how many juice smoothies you drink. I think people who live longer have one thing in common, they enjoy life.

Liked Jack and read some of his books which I recommend to all. Why buy a Dr Phil diet book?

He was simple with his approach to health.

He once was asked which is more important: diet or exercise?

He said to forget all the special organic food stuff and exersice. If you are in shape and exercise, your body will compensate.

"Exercise is the King, diet is the Queen."

I'm with you BDT. This was a great blow to me. As was my father's passing at 83 a couple years ago (an AVID JACK fan who also followed Jack's mentor, Paul Bragg--who if I remember correctly, also died at about 96 or so--in a surfing acccident?).

Jack Lalanne was one of a kind. Single-handedly changed the fitness industry and introduced the notion that weight-lifting was a GOOD thing for ALL kinds or athletes--didn't make you muscle-bound, lol.

He could do things in his 80s that I still can't do? And I lost over 30 lbs. last year in China.

A real phenomenon...who seems to have lived for the NOW up till the very end and was taken in a flash--much like my father who went from an aneurysm but was in top shape till that 'accident'.

RIP Jack. I remember your TV show well!

Remember watching his exercise program on an old black & white console TV we had when I was just a little kid. I couldn't have been more than 4-5 years old and I'd imitate him doing jumping jacks.

Me too! Thanks funny! I also wanted to lift weights. Now, I lift a knife and fork.

    RIP Jack!

I'll venture to say that he never needed Viagara up to the very end. In fact he may have went out while doing a threesome!

    From his BLOG:
    Our American Hero.
    Dear faithful students,
Yesterday we lost a dear friend, a devoted husband, a loving father, a true hero to us all.

Jack died of respiratory failure due to pneumonia Sunday afternoon at his home in Morro Bay on California’s Central Coast. He was surrounded with his loving family, his wife Elaine of 51 years, daughter Yvonne and sons Danny and Jon.

Jack has left the world a happy, healthier, more fit place, and his legacy will live on forever.

    Remember as Jack would say:
“Anything in Life is Possible, if YOU Make it Happen!” ~Jack LaLanne
