Suggestions for rears - TSi
Greetings!
I'm working on replacing out the speakers that came with my Onkyo 7.1 system. The receiver itself is great, but the speakers leave a bit to be desired.
I've ordered a pair of Cherry TSi500s for front left/right, a Cherry CS20 for center, and a PSW505 to round it all out. The goal is to have a solid system for TV, movies, and concert videos.
My question is about the rear left/center/rights. I'm not trying to be cheap and I don't want to regret what I purchase, but I also don't want to waste money where it really won't help. Maybe I'm not applying the appropriate importance of the surrounds to the mix.
My first inclination is to go with TSi200s for the left/right, but that raises several questions.
They come in pairs, so what about center?
Do I really need the 200s or would 100s, monitors, or something else be just as good?
Or would it be better to go with four 100s rather than a pair of 200s?
Could I just get away with using the Onkyo surrounds? I know they won't be an exact match, but does that matter as much as it does with the fronts and center?

i think you will be just fine with 4 tsi100's. you could even get 4 owm3's or owm5's if space is at a premium.50" samsung dlp

What would wiring and placement of the four look like? Would I still need a center rear?
Sorry for such a novice question. I'm just a guy looking for a good sound. -
no problemo, i'm still learning too. if your receiver is 7.1 capable you can have 4 surrounds. technically 2 are surrounds, and 2 are rear surrounds. i have my surrounds mounted on the walls to the left and right of the seating area. they are a little behind the couch and angled down a bit. the rear surrounds are directly behind the listening area, and placed as far apart roughly as the fronts.
i went with the owm3's because of where i had to mount them, but i could use pretty much anything for the rear ones. here's a pic for reference.

just a heads up. newegg has the owm3's for $119 a pair, with free shipping.50" samsung dlp

I ordered the owm3s for the rear from newegg. I'm now looking at owm5s for the surround because their depth would be a benefit on the side walls of the rather narrow room.
Am I giving up too much by not going with tsi100/200s for the surround? Should lack of low bass be an issue in this application?
Am I correct in my assumption that the surrounds get more sound than the rears? -
4 more TSI500's. Ever since Dolby Digital came out, it is 5 full range channels. Why not use a full range speaker? You can buy speakers in singles if you want to run 1 center.System:
Samsung LN46C630
Receiver: Yamaha RX-V1
DVD/Blu: Denon 2910/Playstation 3
Front mains: RT16
Front presence: F/X 500i
Center: CS400
Rear surrounds: RT1000p
Rear center: RT7
Subwoofer: PSW505 X 2
2 Channel
Marantz 2252B
Technics SL-Q2 turntable

You, Sir, obviously have deeper pockets than I, for which I apologize. Now if we can discuss this on a level where simple Proles such as myself can participate I would be ever so grateful. -
i don't think you will be unhappy. i went with a "smaller" speaker so i could mount them on the walls, and not have them on stands taking up floorspace. i like to watch movies with the volume way up, and i'm very pleased with the owm's.
I'm with you on not having tons of money to spend, but i truly believe you can spend wisely and be happy. I pretty much picked out stuff based on the constraints of my ht room, but i don't feel that i just "settled".50" samsung dlp

My pockets are not that deep, most of what I have is used. I think one of the best things I did was, first replace my small RT/FX surrounds with RT7' and then replace those with towers. Which only happened because they were given to me. Each greatly improved my experience.
I'm just throwing out the idea, as you stated you wanted a solid system. The concept would follow through then that you would want TI200's over TSI100's.
I don't know what a "proles" is. At least I am not under selling you. Given this may be what you have as a setup reasonably for the next 5-10 years.
I walked in Best Buy a week ago with a $100 gift with a preconceived notion that I only needed a 32 inch TV for my bedroom. I bought a samsung. Today I see that the same model in a 40 inch is $50 more. To bad the sales person didn't have a set of nads to up sale me. I'll keep my set of nads and preach what I practice.
Whatever you do you have a great start. the TSI500's and PSW505 is a lot to enjoy. I have had a couple living arrangements where I only had front channels.System:

Here's a slightly different idea..
Use your owm3's as rears and get a set of VM20's with stands from Club Polk.HT

Good day,
I have the same speakers in the front and when with the Tsi100's changed then out for Klipsch SR20 and just two days ago picked up the Tsi300's for my surrounds. The best money I spent in a while got then on sale perfect sound love im. And I've read many times in this forum better to go bigger and better. Not like me I spent first but the good thing I guess is now I have a couple of complte systems and working on number three.
Have a nice day and enjoy whatever you buy. -
So after looking at the date after posting the reply hope you are enjoying what ever you when with.
