i have been perusing the world of preamps, not terribly knowledgable about what makes one good, one ok, one lousy.

Generally speaking, receivers are not as good as separates, i get that.

How would the 3300s pre section rate, by the way marantz ma 500 u 125 watt amps would be used.

My goal is to have a 2 channell rig within my meager budget.

any help would be appreciated.

While not 'ideal', older Denon AVRs are not bad as pre-amps for hybrid systems (2 channel and HT--I've used one myself and been pretty happy with it)!

If you have it. Set it up and take a listen; it will be an improvement over the Denon by itself!

I have a set of those SDA's as well. The Denon will do you for now. Tubes, even better....though I don't have any myself. I have heard tube systems on SDAs and they're a bit otherworldly!

    Enjoy!
